Johann Michael Sattler
Johann Michael Sattler (born September 28, 1786 in Neuberg bei Herzogenburg , Lower Austria ; † September 27, 1847 in Mattsee , Land Salzburg ) was an Austrian portrait and landscape painter of the 19th century and creator of the well-known Sattler panorama .
Life
From 1804 Sattler attended the Vienna Academy under Hubert Maurer and then earned a living as a portrait painter . In 1816 he married Anna Maria Kittenberger, the foster daughter and universal heir of his friend and former teacher Maurer. In 1819 he came to Salzburg , in 1824 he was commissioned to portray Emperor Franz I , who was just in Salzburg . He was so impressed by the beauty of the city and the arts of Sattler that he expressed the wish "to see Salzburg with its romantic surroundings presented as a panorama" .
In the same year, Johann Michael Sattler began his preliminary sketches for the later world-famous round picture and completed it in 1829 with the help of Friedrich Loos and Johann Joseph Schindler . After completing the city panorama, he traveled through Europe with his wife and two children until 1839 and showed it in numerous cities. In doing so, Sattler made a significant contribution to the discovery of the scenic charms of the city of Salzburg and can be seen today as the first tourism advertiser to a certain extent.
Sattler's son Hubert donated the oil painting to the city of Salzburg in 1870. In 1875 it was set up in a specially built pavilion in the spa garden. It later came to the Salzburg Museum Carolino Augusteum and was damaged when it was destroyed in the Second World War . Today it is on display in the Panorama Museum Salzburg .
The city of Salzburg honored Johann Michael Sattler on May 6, 1829 on the occasion of the completion of the panorama with the honor of citizenship of the city . After his death he found his last resting place for the time being in the Sebastian cemetery, after the opening of the family crypt at the Salzburg municipal cemetery he was laid to rest there.
Afterlife
A Johann Michael Sattler Suite composed by the Salzburg composer Hartmut Schmidt was premiered in 2015. The work describes the life of the painter and the creation of the panorama picture.
