Guido Frederico João Pabst

Guido Frederico João Pabst (born September 19, 1914 in Porto Alegre , † April 27, 1980 in Rio de Janeiro ) was a Brazilian botanist and executive director of an airline. Its official botanical author abbreviation is " Pabst ".

Life

After attending the German school of the Sankt Josephsgemeinde in Pórto Alegre, Pabst studied electrical engineering. In the 1950s he became managing director of the Brazilian airline Varig in Rio de Janeiro. In addition, he was a renowned botanist who studied the Brazilian orchid flora. In 1958 he founded the Herbarium Bradeanum, one of the largest collections of orchids from Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul . In 1969 he founded the orchid journal Bradea . In 1975 and 1977 his two-volume work Orchidaceae Brasilienses was published , in which all of the orchid species known from Brazil were illustrated for the first time.

Pabst published over 150 publications in which about 180 orchid species were described for the first time.

Honors

The Brazilian long-tailed shore rocker ( Cinclodes pabsti ), a pottery bird, was named after Guido Pabst . The orchid genera Pabstia Garay and Pabstiella Brieger & Senghas have also been named in his honor.
