Athletic career
player
Ching started playing soccer at the age of seven and joined the Honolulu Bulls in his homeland . With the support of his mother, who coached him in his early youth, Ching then played at various tournaments on the US mainland and was discovered by the coach of the university team at Gonzaga University . In Spokane , Washington , he led his team to two league titles in the "West Coast Conference" and during his time between 1996 and 2000 a total he achieved 34 goals and 23 assists , and due to a serious he meniscus injury and the subsequent surgery on his right knee in the entire season of 1998 had to pause. During his training, he also worked for the club Spokane Shadow in the amateur league USL Premier Development League (PDL).
In 2001 he moved through the MLS draft system as a 16th position player to LA Galaxy in the US professional league. There he was used in eight games, two of which were play-offs , and scored one goal. He was then given in 2002 to the Seattle Sounders , who played in the A-League, a second-rate league in the United States, and Ching had already used on loan during his time in Los Angeles. He was voted the second best goalscorer in the league and the team of the season in Seattle.
Ching then left the A-League again and through an additional draft round in February 2003, the club San José Earthquakes secured the services of the striker. After Dwayne DeRosario sustained a serious knee injury in the pre-season, Ching was immediately in the starting line-up of his new club. He established himself there from then on, even playing his first international match against Wales at the local Spartan Stadium in May , until he tore his Achilles tendon in August 2003 and was therefore out for the rest of the season and thus also missed the decisive phase when his club played the Championship won. In 2004 he worked his way back in the starting XI and scored 12 goals in the season, making him - together with Eddie Johnson - the top scorer . He received the award for the best comeback of the year ("MLS Comeback Player of the Year") and was voted into the best team in the league this season ( MLS Best XI ). In the national team, Ching was often used in qualifying matches for the 2006 World Cup. In his four games for the United States in 2004, he scored one goal each in his three competitive games against Jamaica and El Salvador .
In 2005, he scored seven goals in 16 games for the Earthquakes, but in a game against FC Dallas in May he suffered an injury to his Achilles tendon, which in the meantime forced him to take longer breaks. In the eleven of Bruce Arena he came to six games, including three qualifying games.
After a total of 25 goals for San José, Ching followed, together with his teammates of the Earthquakes, his club, which had moved to Houston and renamed "Houston Dynamo" and founded. There he scored four goals in Dynamo's first game against the Colorado Rapids on April 2, 2006, which had previously only succeeded six other players in the history of the MLS.
In the same year he was finally able to win the MLS title, the MLS Cup, with his team and after the season he was awarded the award for the most beautiful goal of the year.
At the MLS Expansion Draft 2011, he was drafted by Montreal Impact . After training with the Canadians for a month, he returned to Houston in February 2012 and finally retired from his playing career in 2013.
