Career

society

Ruíz, who is also called El Pescadito ( the little fish ), began his playing career at CSD Municipal , the most successful football club in Guatemala. For half a year he stormed at PAS Ioannina in the first Greek league before moving to Los Angeles Galaxy in Major League Soccer (MLS) in California in January 2000 . The striker Ruiz scored 24 goals in his debut season in 2002, making him the top scorer and winning the Soccer League's Golden Boot Award . With his goals he led his club Galaxy to win the MLS Cup 2002. He was awarded the MLS Most Valuable Player Award (most valuable player of the season). In his second season, Carlos Ruíz was again top scorer with 15 goals.

He then moved from Los Angeles to FC Dallas . In the 2004 season he scored eleven hits in Major League Soccer.

He returned to Los Angeles Galaxy in early 2008 but was transferred to Toronto FC during the season . After the 2008 season, however, they dissolved the contract with him in order to make room in the salary structure.

From January to June 2009 he was under contract with Club Olimpia from Paraguay , then moved to Mexico for Puebla FC . In July 2010 Ruiz moved back to Europe. And again to a Greek club. This time, however, to Aris Thessaloniki . With the club from Macedonia, he was also used in the play-offs of the UEFA Europa League . In the first leg against Austria Wien, Ruiz made it 1-0 in literally the last second. Carlos Ruiz also made it 1-0 in the second leg in Vienna. The game ended 1-1. Ultimately, Aris made it into the group stage through his goals. Ruiz made six appearances in the group stage. In the first game, in the sensational 1-0 win against defending champions Atlético Madrid , Ruiz saw a yellow card in the 73rd minute. In the second game, in the 1: 2 defeat against Rosenborg Trondheim , Ruiz scored to equalize. Aris ultimately prevailed in the group as second behind the top German club Bayer 04 Leverkusen and ahead of Atletico Madrid. In the league Ruiz came to 16 missions, where he managed a hit. This he succeeded on January 4, 2010, when he scored the 1-0 winner on the 16th match day of the Greek league against AO Kavala after three minutes. In the winter break of the 2010/11 season, however, he left Greece again and went back to North America, playing for the Philadelphia Union in 2011 . This was followed by another guest appearance in Mexico with CD Veracruz , before he returned to the American MLS in 2013 and signed with DC United .

National team

After going through all of Guatemala's junior national teams, he played for the Guatemalan national soccer team and took part in qualifying for the 2006 World Cup with the team and also played in the 2005 CONCACAF Gold Cup . Guatemala was eliminated in the preliminary round, but Ruíz scored all three goals of his team. He has been the sole record goal scorer in his country since June 14, 2008, when he scored four goals in the World Cup qualifier against St. Lucia , increasing the record held by his predecessor Juan Carlos Plata from 35 to 39 goals. On August 15, 2012, he played his 100th international match and scored his 50th international goal . On August 14, 2014, he also replaced Gustavo Adolfo Cabrera as the Guatemalan record international player with his 105th international match . By September 6, 2016, he had increased the records to 133 international matches and 68 goals, 39 of which were in World Cup qualifiers, with which he also replaced the previous record holder, Iranian Ali Daei , on September 6 . Since Guatemala missed the fifth round as third in the qualifying group, he could not expand the record. On September 16, 2016, he announced the end of his career.
