Jason Clarence Circle (born December 29, 1972 in Omaha , Nebraska ) is a retired American soccer player and current soccer coach .
He played most of his career as a player in Major League Soccer, where he played for Dallas Burn and Real Salt Lake . He played a total of 305 games in the MLS and scored 108 goals. Kreis is currently third on the MLS 'list of all-time goalscorers, which he even led from October 3, 2006 to May 19, 2007.
Youth and college
Jason Kreis grew up in Mandeville, Louisiana . There he attended Mandeville High School and played on the local soccer team. He was one of the leading players on the team and regularly took part in the Class 5A state soccer tournaments. In addition to his work for the high school team, he also played for the Baton Rouge United Jags. With the team he was able to win the prestigious Capital Cup in Washington, DC in 1991 .
After high school, Kreis studied at Duke University in Durham , North Carolina . For the Duke Blue Devils, he was on the pitch at every game.
Club career
From 1994 he played with the Raleigh Flyers. The team from Raleigh, North Carolina played in the United States Interregional Soccer League, the predecessor of the United Soccer Leagues .
When Major League Soccer played its first season in 1996, Dallas Burn was a circle on the field. He also scored the first goal in the club's history. In total, Kreis played for eight years at the club that was renamed FC Dallas. After the 2004 season he left the team. At this point he was the most successful player in the history of the Frisco, Texas MLS franchise .
On November 17, 2004, Kreis was transferred to Real Salt Lake. The club from Salt Lake City was then the new franchise of the MLS. Here too, Kreis scored the first goal in the club's history. He is the only player in the history of the MLS who managed to score the first goal twice. On August 13, 2005 he was the first player to score the 100th league goal.
On May 3, 2007, he announced his retirement as an active player.
Coaching career
After finishing his career as a player, he took over the coaching position at Real Salt Lake. At 34, he was the youngest major league soccer coach. He has led the team twice in play-offs and won the MLS Cup in 2009 . At the MLS Cup 2013 he lost with his team in the final against Sporting Kansas City.
On December 11, 2013, it was announced that Circle would coach New York City FC's new MLS franchise from the 2015 season . For this he turned down an offer to extend his contract with Real Salt Lake. He will start working for the new club on January 1, 2014, and will sit in at Manchester City for the first time . Circle was released after his first season with the New Yorkers because the team could not reach the play-offs.
In July 2016, Kreis took over the Orlando City MLS team . In mid-June 2018, the franchise separated from him.
In January 2019, Kreis became head of the academy of the MLS franchise Inter Miami . In March 2019, Kreis also became the head coach of the US U23 national team . In mid-February 2020, Kreis also took over Fort Lauderdale CF , Inter Miami's farm team from USL League One , as head coach.
National team
The striker made his first international match for the USA in 1996 against El Salvador . He scored one goal in his 14 international matches.
