Jaime Moreno (2008)

Jaime Moreno Morales (born January 19, 1974 in Santa Cruz de la Sierra ) is a former Bolivian football player . The striker was active for the US first division club DC United until the end of the 2010 MLS season . He then became a technical trainer in the franchise's youth academy.

Moreno led from August 2007 the record scorer list of the Major League Soccer . Meanwhile, Landon Donovan and Jeff Cunningham have scored more goals than Moreno, who scored 133 goals in the MLS. On April 17, 2009 he was the first MLS player to reach over 100 goals and more than 100 assists.

Club career

Moreno started his career in his native Bolivia. From 1991 to 1994 he played for the first division club Blooming from Santa Cruz de la Sierra . After 57 games he moved to the Colombian club Santa Fe CD .

Then followed the move to Middlesbrough FC , making him the first Bolivian in the Premier League . In his two years at Riverside Stadium , however, he rarely got beyond the position of the substitute player.

As a result, he moved after the 1995/1996 season to DC United in the MLS , the professional league of the United States . In his first six months in Washington, DC , Moreno became a regular player and helped his club win the MLS Cup . In 1997 he was named the best player of the year and became the league's top scorer with 16 goals. He also crowned the season by winning the cup again. In the 1998 season he again scored 16 goals and gave 11 assists. In the election for Player of the Year, he came second behind his team-mate and compatriot Marco Etcheverry . In 1999 he was able to celebrate another trophy, namely the third cup victory with his club. He missed the 2001 and 2002 seasons almost entirely due to various injuries.

At the end of the 2002 season he fell out with his coach Ray Hudson and moved to league rivals MetroStars for a year . He was only used eleven times in the entire year and scored two goals. He scored one of these goals against his ex-club United.

After that season he returned to DC United . With his new and old club, he added another cup win to his list of titles. In 2005 he was given a very special honor when he was voted one of the top eleven of all time in the MLS by selected sports reports. In August 2007 he scored his 109th league goal, making him the best goalscorer in MLS history and surpassing Jason Kreis' record.

On August 21, 2010, DC United and Moreno announced that they would end their relationship at the end of the season. He played his last game on October 23, 2010 against Toronto FC . He also scored his last goal in the game.

At the MLS Re-Entry Draft in December 2010, Moreno was not selected by any team. He retired and joined DC United on March 4, 2011.

National team

With the Bolivian national team , Moreno took him at the age of 20 in the 1994 World Cup. Three years later he was reappointed by the national coach in the squad for a major tournament, the 1997 Copa America . Moreno has not been nominated for international matches since 2001, before returning to a friendly in 2007. He was also appointed to the Bolivian squad for the 2007 Copa America , where he scored two goals.

In October 2008 he announced his resignation from the national team. He scored nine goals in 75 international matches.
