history

The first batch took place for the inauguration on August 26, 1995. Middlesbrough FC met Chelsea FC and Boro won the game 2-0 in front of 28,286 spectators. The first goal in the stadium was scored by Craig Hignett . At the beginning, the sports facility was sponsored by the BT Cellnet Riverside Stadium , but the ten-year contract until 2005 was prematurely terminated at the end of the 2001/02 season.

In 1998 the building was expanded by 5,000 seats by expanding two stadium corners; the cost of the expansion was £ 5 million. The current capacity is 35,100 seats, this can be increased to 42,000 if some seats should be converted into standing space, which has been abolished in English and international football.

In 2005, the old Ayresome Park entrance gates were re-erected by the club in front of Riverside Stadium as a reminder of times gone by and now serve as the entrance gates to the new stadium. In front of the stadium are the statues of George Hardwick , who played for Middlesbrough for 13 years, and Wilf Mannion , who played for the Boros for 18 years . Borobrick Road is also in front of the stadium . With a donation you can immortalize yourself with a stone with your name on it.
