On July 19, 2012 it was announced that the Heineken Brewery had acquired the right to name the stadium. Since August 1st, the home of the Terriers and Giants has been named John Smith's Stadium after John Smith's Brewery, which belongs to Heineken . The contract has a term of five years.

At first only the two tiers along the pitch were completed, the third grandstand in the south was inaugurated four months later. Construction of the fourth tier began in 1996 and was completed in 1997. The playing field has underfloor heating . The guest fans are housed at the John Smith's stand .
