The AJ Bell Stadium is a rugby - and football stadium in England Barton-upon-Irwell , Metropolitan Borough City of Salford . The sports and event facility has been home to rugby league club Salford Red Devils ( Super League ) and rugby union club Sale Sharks ( Aviva Premiership Rugby ) since 2012 . The following year, Manchester United Reserves joined as the third stadium user.

history

The beginning of today's stadium is in the mid- 2000s . In 2005, Salford City Council approved the Salford Red Devils stadium plans. The old Red Devils ' venue , The Willows , built in 1900, was to be replaced by a new building with 20,000 seats for £ 32 million in Barton-upon-Irwell. The stadium was to be built by Red City Developments . However, there were financial difficulties in 2007 that put the construction project at risk. The planned completion for 2009 had to be postponed. The stadium was to become part of a £ 130 million sports and leisure complex. In April 2010 the Red City Developments went into bankruptcy .

To continue the stadium project, Salford City Council set up a joint venture with the Peel Group . The Buckingham Group has been selected for the construction of the stadium with a total financial volume of 26 million £. The stadium location is close to the Manchester Ship Canal and the M60 motorway . In March 2010, the permit for the construction of the new home came the Red Devils with 15,000 seats on a 70 acre (28 hectares ) of land in Barton-upon-Irwell.

Construction started in December 2010. In January 2012, the Salford City Stadium opened. At the beginning of April 2012, the Sale Sharks signed a contract for the use of the stadium for the next 25 years from the 2012/13 season. Previously, the Sale Sharks played their games at Edgeley Park in Stockport for nine years .

The main grandstand offers conference rooms, suites and lounges with space for two to around 1,150 people. They can be rented for a wide variety of events such as exhibitions, product presentations, seminars and weddings , banquets , parties or dance events.

In September 2013, AJ Bell , a financial services company , became the main sponsor of Sale Sharks on a nine-year contract. As a result, the stadium was named AJ Bell Stadium .
