Salford is a Metropolitan Borough with City status in Metropolitan County Greater Manchester in England . It is named after the city of Salford ; However, the administrative seat is Swinton . Other significant locations in the district are Boothstown , Broughton , Cadishead , Eccles , Irlam , Pendlebury , Pendleton and Worsley .
The reorganization of the borders and the competencies of the local authorities resulted in the formation of the Metropolitan Borough in 1974. The County Borough of Salford, the Municipal Boroughs of Eccles and Swinton and Pendlebury and the Urban Districts of Irlam and Worsley were merged. These local authorities previously belonged to the county of Lancashire .
In the southeast of Salford the River Irwell forms the border with Manchester , in the south the Manchester Ship Canal that of Trafford .
In 1986 Salford became a de facto unitary authority when the central government dissolved the higher-level administration of Greater Manchester. Salford remained part of Greater Manchester for ceremonial purposes , as well as for individual higher-level functions such as police, fire services and public transport.
A well-known citizen of the place was George Bradshaw (1801-1853), an English cartographer and course book publisher.
