George Bradshaw (born July 29, 1801 in Pendleton , † September 6, 1853 in Christiania ) was an English cartographer and publisher . He achieved particular fame for his widely distributed course books .

Life

He was born in Windsor Bridge, Pendleton, now part of the City of Salford . His parents Thomas and Mary, née Rogers, had their only son taught according to the teachings of the theologian Swedberg .

After an apprenticeship as a copper engraver in Manchester , he moved with his parents to Belfast in 1820 and opened his own workshop there. Two years later he returned to Manchester to continue his business there and from 1827 to specialize in the engraving and printing of maps . His maps became known as "Bradshaw's Maps of Inland Navigation".

He became a member of the Quakers and helped with other reformers to hold peace conferences in Manchester, as well as to build schools and soup kitchens.

He married his wife Martha, née Darbyshire, of Stretton, south of Warrington , on May 16, 1839 . In the same year, he published his first course book Bradshaw's Railway Time Tables for the new rail transport for six pence . As early as 1840, his book was renamed Bradshaw's Railway Companion and expanded to include several section maps. The price doubled to one shilling. The timetable was only reprinted irregularly, but the timetables were updated every month. On the advice of his London business partner William Jones Adams, he also published Bradshaw's Monthly Railway Guide every month from 1841 at the old price of six pence, which achieved worldwide fame not least because of its striking yellow cover. Some railroad companies initially fought their course books as annoying competition. He countered this by shopping there and bringing the conflict up at the shareholders' meeting.

On a trip to Norway he fell ill with Asian cholera at a friend's house near Christiania and died there within a few hours. In addition to his wife, he also left their son, Christopher.
