Tameside is a metropolitan borough in Metropolitan County Greater Manchester in England , named after the River Tame . The administrative seat is the city of Ashton-under-Lyne . Other significant locations in the borough are Audenshaw , Denton , Droylsden , Dukinfield , Haughton Green , Hyde , Longdendale , Mossley and Stalybridge .
The reorganization of the borders and the competencies of the local authorities resulted in the formation of the Metropolitan Borough in 1974. The municipal boroughs Ashton-under-Lyne, Dukinfield, Hyde, Mossley and Stalybridge and the urban districts Audenshaw, Denton, Droylsden and Longdendale were merged. These local authorities previously belonged to the counties of Cheshire and Lancashire and to a small extent to Yorkshire .
In 1986, Tameside became a de facto Unitary Authority when the central government dissolved the higher-level administration of Greater Manchester. Tameside remained part of Greater Manchester for ceremonial purposes , as well as for individual higher-level functions such as police , fire brigade and public transport.
