Stockport is a metropolitan borough in metropolitan county Greater Manchester in England . The administrative seat is the city of the same name, Stockport , in which around half of the population lives. Other significant places in the borough are Bramhall , Bredbury , Cheadle , Cheadle Hulme , Davenport , Hazel Grove , Marple , Mellor , Reddish and Romiley .
The reorganization of the borders and the competencies of the local authorities resulted in the formation of the Metropolitan Borough in 1974. The County Borough Stockport, the urban districts Bredbury and Romiley, Cheadle and Gatley, Hazel Grove and Bramhall and Marple were merged. These local authorities previously belonged to the county of Cheshire .
In 1986, Stockport became a de facto unitary authority when the central government dissolved the county’s superordinate administration. Stockport remained part of Greater Manchester for ceremonial purposes , as well as for individual higher-level functions such as police, fire brigade and public transport.
