Trafford has been a Metropolitan Borough in Metropolitan County Greater Manchester in England since 1974 . The administrative seat is the city of Stretford . Other significant locations in the borough are Altrincham , Bowdon , Hale , Hale Barns , Old Trafford , Partington , Sale , Timperley and Urmston .
In the Trafford are Old Trafford stadium of the football club Manchester United and Old Trafford Cricket Ground of Lancashire County Cricket Club , also Old Trafford called. Trafford is also home to the Trafford Center (the largest shopping center in north-west England) and the Imperial War Museum North , an offshoot of the Imperial War Museum in London .
The reorganization of the borders and the competencies of the local authorities resulted in the formation of the Metropolitan Borough in 1974. Areas of two counties were merged. In Cheshire these were the boroughs of Altrincham and Sale, the urban districts of Bowdon and Hale and part of the rural district of Bucklow; in Lancashire these were the Borough Stretford and the Urban District Urmston.
In 1986, Trafford became a de facto unitary authority when the central government dissolved the higher-level administration of Greater Manchester. Trafford remained part of Greater Manchester for ceremonial purposes , as well as for individual higher-level functions such as police, fire services and public transport.
