The Old Trafford Cricket Ground , commonly referred to simply as Old Trafford , is one of the six traditional test-match stadiums in England and home to the Lancashire County Cricket Club .

Stadion

The stadium has been home to the Lancashire County Cricket Club since 1864, but has been the home of the Manchester Cricket Club since 1856 . The first test match took place here in 1884. It is located on Talbot Road in the Metropolitan Borough of Trafford in Greater Manchester , not far from Old Trafford Football Stadium . It normally offers 15,000 spectators; for international matches such as test matches, the spectator capacity is increased to 22,000. The two ends of the pitch are called Stretford End to the west and Brian Statham End (formerly Warwick Road End ) to the east.

The three-story pavilion (clubhouse) is the oldest part of the stadium and dates back to 1895. In contrast to other stadiums, the clubhouse is parallel to the cricket pitch, which of all things gives club members a poor view of the game.

After originally considering moving to a new cricket stadium, the decision was made to thoroughly modernize the stadium, which should be completed by the end of 2012, in time for the next Ashes series in 2013. The stadium was therefore closed for the entire 2011 season. In the course of the renovation, the pitch will also be re-created and rotated 90 degrees in a north-south direction.

history

  • 1956: Jim Laker becomes the first bowler to hit all 10 wickets in a Test innings in the second innings of the 4th Test against Australia (10-53). In the first innings he had already scored 9-37, his total of 19 wickets in this test are unmatched to this day.
  • 1963: On May 1st the first one-day match with the start of the Gillette Cup took place. Ironically, that first one-day match lasted two days.
