One Love Manchester was a benefit concert by the American singer Ariana Grande , which commemorated the victims of the terrorist attack in Manchester on May 22, 2017 . The event took place on June 4th 2017 at the Old Trafford Cricket Ground in Manchester and was attended by approximately 50,000 people. Other artists included Justin Bieber , The Black Eyed Peas , Coldplay , Miley Cyrus , Niall Horan , Little Mix , Katy Perry , Take That , Pharrell Williams , Marcus Mumford and Robbie Williams .

The proceeds from the concert went to the We Love Manchester Emergency Fund , which was set up by the City of Manchester and the British Red Cross after the attack in the Manchester Arena . The event was broadcast in at least 38 countries including the UK, Germany and Switzerland.

On May 22, 2017, an explosive charge was used to commit a suicide bombing in the Manchester Arena in Manchester after a concert by Ariana Grande. 23 people, including the assassin, were killed and 116 were seriously injured.

A few hours after the concert had ended, Grande spoke up via Twitter and Facebook : “My heart is broken. I'm so sorry. Words fail me. ”She broke off her tour and flew to her family in Florida . She later announced that she would initiate a benefit concert in Manchester for the victims of the attack.

Developments and planning

Tickets for the event went on sale on June 1, 2017 for 40 pounds (around 45 euros). The tickets were sold out within a few minutes. On internet platforms such as eBay , tickets were offered for significantly higher sums. eBay stated that it would delete such offers immediately.

All visitors to the concert on May 22nd had until May 31st to register for one of the 14,000 tickets reserved for them in order to receive free entry to the benefit concert. However, about 10,000 more registrations from people who were not at the previous concert resulted in a delay in processing applications.

Greater Manchester police increased security following the terrorist attack in London the day before the show . She carried out additional security checks and every visitor to the event was searched.

Before Marcus Mumford opened the concert with his appearance, a minute's silence was observed in memory of the victims of the attacks in Manchester and London.

After Grande's first appearance of the evening, Stevie Wonder appeared on video. After the performance of Heap , a video was shown of British football player David Beckham reciting a poem for the city. Videos from other artists and celebrities including Halsey , Bastille , Anne-Marie , Demi Lovato , Jennifer Hudson , Blossoms , Chance the Rapper , Camila Cabello , The Chainsmokers , DJ Khaled , Little Mix , Circa Waves , Kendall Jenner , Clean Bandit , Dua Lipa , Sean Paul , Nick Grimshaw , Kings of Leon , Sam Smith , Rita Ora , Shawn Mendes , Twenty One Pilots , Paul McCartney , U2 and the players from Manchester United and Manchester City football clubs , who all expressed their solidarity with Manchester, were also featured shown.

The event was broadcast in at least 38 countries including the United Kingdom, Germany, Switzerland, China, the United States, Brazil, France, New Zealand, Canada and Australia. Live streams were also available on Internet platforms such as YouTube , Facebook and Twitter .

In the UK, the concert was broadcast live on BBC One , BBC Radio and Capital radio. The television broadcast was moderated by Sara Cox and Ore Oduba, while Nick Grimshaw and Anita Rani reported from the backstage area and the audience. The radio broadcast was moderated and commentated by Scott Mills , Jo Whiley, Phil Williams and Becky Want. The concert reached an average of 10.9 million viewers on BBC One, corresponding to a market share of 49.3 percent. The peak was with 14.5 million viewers. 22.6 million people watched at least three minutes of the show, making it the most watched show on UK television in 2017.

In Germany, the concert was shown on rbb television 15 minutes later. The broadcast was moderated by Sonja Koppitz . 280,000 viewers saw the broadcast on rbb television, which corresponded to a market share of 1.1 percent. On the radio, broadcasters Fritz (moderated by Chris Guse ), NDR 2 , SWR 3 , 1 Live (moderated by Simon Beeck ) and Dasding broadcast live from Manchester.

In Switzerland, the concert was broadcast on SRF 3 radio with a time delay .

In Italy the concert was broadcast on Rai 1 .

The British Red Cross received £ 2.35 million in donations to the We Love Manchester Emergency Fund during the three-hour concert . The next day the British Red Cross announced that it had received more than £ 10 million so far. Two months after the concert, fundraiser chairwoman Sue Murphy announced that the relatives of the 22 victims who died in the Manchester terrorist attack will each receive £ 250,000 in compensation. The We Love Manchester Emergency Fund raised more than 23 million US dollars (approx. 19.78 million euros).

Grande also donated the proceeds of a re-release of her single One Last Time and her live version of Over the Rainbow to the fund.
