biography

Childhood and youth

Ashley Nicolette Frangipane grew up in a dysfunctional family in New Jersey. Her parents dropped out of college when her mother was pregnant with her. She was the oldest of three children. Her parents worked in low-wage jobs to support the family and moved frequently. Like her mother, Frangipane suffers from bipolar disorder . She was already interested in music in her childhood, learning the violin, viola and cello, among other things, before settling on the acoustic guitar at the age of 14. Her first songs were written in high school. She derived her stage name as an anagram from her first name Ashley, but also sees it as a reminder of Halsey Street in Brooklyn , where her boyfriend at the time lived. She broke with her family several times in her teenage years. When she was seventeen, she attempted suicide .

After graduating from Warren Hills Regional High School, she first attended the Rhode Island School of Design , but could not afford college. Then she found a community college, which she dropped out after a few semesters. For a while, she lived on the street hanging out with drug addicts teenagers.

Musical career

At a party she met a music producer who shortly thereafter produced her first single, Ghost . He uploaded it to SoundCloud , where it became successful within a short time. The first labels showed interest in her and she started playing concerts. During a tour, she suffered a miscarriage that weighed heavily on her. But she began to concentrate on her music career and signed her first record deal with Astralwerks in 2014. She then played as a support for The Kooks . In the same year their first EP Room 93 was released, which reached number 159 on the Billboard 200 .

Her debut album Badlands followed in 2015 , with which she achieved her breakthrough. It peaked at number 2 on the US Billboard charts. It went platinum in the United States . Her following US tour was almost sold out within a few minutes, including her appearance at Madison Square Garden , which concluded the tour. social commitment

Especially at the beginning of her career, she called herself “tri-bi” on Twitter , where she described herself as bipolar, bisexual and “biracial”. After some criticism, she called this a misleading label. Yet these three components of her identity are important to her. Although her appearance shows her as "white", she has black roots and she sees herself as a descendant and representative of a black culture. References to their bisexuality and bipolar disorder are also often found in their texts. Her self-image with regard to these three identities also brought her into conflict with other musicians. She described Iggy Azalea's music as "a complete disregard of black culture" and the rapper as an idiot. She had further arguments with Demi Lovato . She also supported her then friend G-Eazy with various beefs .

She supported Bernie Sanders in the 2016 presidential election in the United States . She has participated in several charity singles, including Hands , a single dedicated to the victims and relatives of the Orlando attack on June 12, 2016 . In addition to her, Selena Gomez , Pink and Britney Spears participated in the single . In 2019 she took part in a benefit single called Earth , which aims to raise awareness of climate change .

Halsey participated in the radio network Entercom's I'm Listening for suicide prevention campaign . She sees herself as a feminist and supported, among other things, the Women's March on Washington and its continuation 2018 Women's March , which was primarily directed against Donald Trump . There she performed a poem that processed her own experiences with sexual abuse and the oppression of women. She also took part in the March for Our Lives .

Music genre

Halsey plays a mix of singer-songwriter music and pop mixed with electronic influences. She sees herself as an ethnopluralistic personality with both black and white roots. So she took essential influences from her music from both indie rock and hip-hop culture. In her youth she listened to Tupac , NWA and the Wu-Tang Clan as well as Nirvana , The Cure , Gin Blossoms and Alanis Morissette . The first album is still clearly dominated by the EDM style, while influences from R&B such as The Weeknd and TLC are particularly evident on the second album .

Private life

From 2015 to 2016 she had a relationship with the music producer Lido , who helped her with her first album. Her second album is said to be largely about her relationship with him. A rather dysfunctional relationship with G-Eazy ensued . Not only Halsey was in various beefs involved the rapper with even appeared tabloid photos that their cocaine documented consumption. There were also multiple public disputes and affairs. The couple finally separated in October 2018. A brief relationship with Yungblud ensued .
