The Kooks are a British indie rock - band from Brighton , England . The band was founded in 2004 and named best British act at the MTV Europe Music Awards in 2006.
history
Formation of the band
During their studies at the Brighton Institute of Modern Music in 2003, the four band members met with the help of mutual acquaintances. In 2004 they started playing music together, creating over a hundred ideas for songs. At a concert at the end of the term at BIMM, the group got the opportunity to cover a song for a performance. They then appeared as The Kooks (American English: "the crazy", "crazy", "eccentric"), named after the song of the same name on David Bowie's 1971 album Hunky Dory , and played Reptilia from The Strokes . Then they noticed that the cover of songs could not satisfy them - they began to fish out the best of both new and their previously collected song ideas and to write complete pieces of music.
Discovery of the Kooks
After almost three months, they recorded a selection of songs on demo tape with a friend in London and sent them to a supposed concert manager in the hope of smaller performances. However, this turned out to be a music manager and briefly signed the band. Shortly afterwards he managed to get them a contract with the record label Virgin Records . With the contract in their pockets and thinking about their band formation only three months ago, they decided to put recordings for a debut album on the back burner and to tour instead. Thereupon they implemented their wish and appeared inter alia as the opening act for The Thrills and The Subways and toured with them through the United Kingdom.
Career
It wasn't until June 2005 that The Kooks came to the Konk recording studio in London . They were supported by the well-known producer Tony Hoffer , who has already worked with Beck , Supergrass and Phoenix . The debut album Inside In / Inside Out went five times platinum with two million sales . Six single releases have been released, including: Eddie's Gun , You Don't Love Me and Naïve . On November 2, 2006, they were named Best Act from Great Britain at the MTV Europe Music Awards and were nominated for the British Breakthrough Act and Best British Single awards at the 2007 Brit Awards , but received no awards .
On April 11, 2008 their second album Konk was released , which was named after the studio of the same name by Ray Davies . While working on the second album, on January 30th, 2008 bassist Max Rafferty announced his departure from the band. He was initially replaced by Dan Logan from Cat The Dog , but then permanently replaced by Peter Denton. On March 1, 2010, drummer Paul Garred announced his resignation from the band. The reasons for this included nerve problems in the right arm. He was replaced shortly afterwards by Chris Prendergast.
In 2011 the band officially announced that drummer Paul Garred is back on drums for The Kooks.
On September 9, 2011 the third studio album by The Kooks was released under the name "Junk of the Heart".
style
Their multilayered musical style is often compared to bands like Supergrass and Blur . He borrows mainly elements from Britpop , Reggae , Soul , Blues , Funk , but also Garage Rock .
Concerts
Even before their debut, the Kooks opened up for The Thrills and The Subways . After their breakthrough in the British charts, they were able to appear as the opening act for the Rolling Stones on their world tour A Bigger Bang . In 2006 they also played at the German sister festivals Hurricane / Southside and Haldern Pop and in 2007, 2009 and 2011 at the German festivals Rock im Park and Rock am Ring . They also played on June 21, 2008 at “ Rock-A-Field ”, a music festival in Luxembourg, and also at the Hurricane / Southside Festival in 2008, 2012 and 2014. The concert at “Meridian” Houston Texas on October 3, 2008 was canceled at short notice due to loss of voice. The Kooks were also the opening act at the Rolling Stones' concerts as part of the No Filter Tour on June 22, 2018 in the Berlin Olympiastadion and on June 30, 2018 in the Mercedes-Benz-Arena in Stuttgart.
