The Haldern Pop Festival , also known as " Haldern Open Air" , is an open-air festival that has been held annually since 1984 in Haldern on the Lower Rhine on the old riding arena on Lohstrasse.
Alignment
Rock and pop bands in particular perform at the Haldern Pop Music Festival . The focus is increasingly on still unknown groups of indie music , singer-songwriters and folk rock and pop, as well as a few nationally and internationally known bands. It is thus similar to the Immergut Festival and the Orange Blossom Special Festival . In the past, well-known artists such as Bob Geldof (1991), Heather Nova (1998) and Patti Smith (2003 and 2014) have also appeared. The venue is the Alte Reitplatz in Haldern, which limits the number of spectators to around 7,000. The organizers categorically rule out an expansion of the festival site and an associated increase in the number of visitors.
history
The festival emerged in 1984 from a party (Sause) that has been taking place since 1981 and was organized by 13 acolytes from the town. In 1982/83 there were over 1,500 visitors; The festival was initially financially supported by loans from acquaintances, with which these people were referred to as "shareholders". Live music was played for the first time at the festival on June 23, 1984. In 1987, Extrabreit , The Affair , The Trash and Midnite Fun played , and it was profitable for the first time since 1984. In 1988 there were over 2000 visitors, among the bands were the relatively unknown bands Element of Crime and Plan B at that time .
In 1991 Bob Geldof appeared in Haldern as a special event , and The Jeremy Days , The Blue Airplanes , Plan B and Tuff Babies played in front of almost 5,000 spectators. Another highlight was the Spanish band Héroes del Silencio in 1992 . Other well-known bands that performed at the Haldern Pop Music Festival are dEUS , Phoenix , Guano Apes , Tocotronic , Blumfeld , Muse , Sportfreunde Stiller , Reamonn , Starsailor , Travis , Franz Ferdinand , Keane , Mando Diao , the Cardigans , Mogwai and Edge , Kaiser Chiefs , Kaizers Orchestra , Emilíana Torrini , Adam Green , Kelis , Paolo Nutini , The Kooks , Maxïmo Park , Kate Nash , The View , Kilians , Editors , The Flaming Lips , Rox , Mumford & Sons , Arctic Circle 18 , Jan Delay and fat bread .
Under the motto “You the swallow, we the summer”, Haldern Pop initiated a crowdfunding project for the first time in 2013 to finance a film documentation of the 30th festival.
The 2020 festival had to be canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic .
Bands and dates
Festival environment
From 1998 to 2005 a sampler of music by the bands of the year was released. From this, the independent record label Haldern Pop Recordings developed in 2004 . When a pub in the middle of the village was to be given up, a concept for an off-day hotel was developed. Bands who have a day off between two appearances have been given free board and lodging in exchange for an evening concert in the Haldern Pop Bar since 2009 . In the house there is also the event agency room 3 , which u. a. organized the festival, the label Haldern Pop Recordings and the Haldern Pop Shop , so that a close cooperation is possible. The local festival environment also includes the Keusgen recording studio , where small acoustic concerts take place during the festival, and the microphone manufacturer Dirk Brauner . The festival offshoot Kaltern Pop Festival has existed in the South Tyrolean village of Kaltern since 2015 , where an indoor festival is organized every October.
Before the Haldern Pop Festival in 2006, the Spiegelzelt went on tour with 15 bands through Cologne , Heidelberg , Berlin , Leipzig , Munich , Dresden and Hamburg on May 5th .
