Grant Hart (2005)

Grantzberg "Grant" Vernon Hart (born March 18, 1961 in St. Paul , Minnesota ; † September 13, 2017 ibid) was an American drummer , guitarist and songwriter , who became known as a member of Hüsker Dü .

Career

Grant Hart grew up in St. Paul, Minnesota. In 1971, at the age of ten, he inherited his brother's drums, who had died in a traffic accident. He then played as an adolescent at weddings and other festivals and in changing bands with school friends.

Hüsker Dü

As a teenager he worked with Greg Norton , who later became the bassist of Hüsker Dü, in the record store Memory Lane . There he met Bob Mold , who came to this shop frequently. Hart and Mold decided to start a band because of their similar musical tastes. In 1978, after a few intermediate stops, Hüsker Dü was founded. The band's songwriting was carried out equally by Mold and Hart. In the mid-80s, rumors arose that a member of the band might be gay. As it turned out, this was true of both Hart and Mold; however, as has often been claimed, the two were never a couple.

At the time of Warehouse: Songs and Stories (1987) was published, the personal differences between Hart and Mold were growing. The relationship between the two was made difficult by drug abuse. Hart was now addicted to heroin ; Mold alcoholics and addicts on amphetamines . In 1987 the band made a farewell tour of North America; after a concert in Columbia (Missouri) , where Hart had great difficulty playing the drums due to an intoxication, the band broke up. The relationship between Mold and Hart remained disturbed afterwards.

Nova mob

After the dissolution of Hüsker Dü, Hart was able to successfully overcome his dependency. In 1989 he published his first solo EP 2541 (the number of the office and rehearsal room of Hüsker Dü). He also formed a new band, Nova Mob . With this band, where he worked as a guitarist and singer, he recorded two albums and an EP. He toured Europe and America several times and had a loyal following there. After the last album Nova Mob , the band broke up in 1997 because the bassist left and moved to the Netherlands .

solo

After Nova Mob, Grant Hart recorded a few solo albums. His album Ecce Homo was released in 1996 and Good News for Modern Man in 1999 . In addition to his musical works, Hart was also active as a writer . In 2004, on the occasion of a benefit concert for the bassist of the band Soul Asylum , Karl Mueller, who suffered from cancer (and who later died) , Hart reunited with Bob Mold for two songs. On his official website , a photo of this gig can be seen on a page titled "Hell Freezes Over". In November 2009 the album Hot Wax , which had been announced for years, was released . In November 2010 Hart released the compilation Oeuvrevue ( Hazelwood label ) with rarities from 1988 to 1995. In 2013, Domino Records released the double album The Argument .

Grant Hart died of kidney cancer in September 2017 at the age of 56 .
