Nova Mob was an American alternative rock band that was founded in 1989 by former Hüsker Dü drummer Grant Hart .

Band history

Nova Mob, named after characters from the book Nova Express by William S. Burroughs , was founded in 1989 by the former drummer of Hüsker Dü , Grant Hart . In 1987, Hüsker Dü broke up due to increasing personal differences between Hart and the band's other main songwriter, Bob Mold . These differences were exacerbated by their drug use. Grant Hart was addicted to heroin at the time of the dissolution .

However, Hart overcame his addiction and turned back to music. After releasing a solo album, he formed Nova Mob with Tommy Rey ( drums ), Kevin Lavaly ( guitar ) and Tom Merkl ( bass ). Hart himself acted as singer and guitarist for the band. Rey was later replaced by Michael Crego. Together they began to write new songs and record an album, Last Days of Pompeii , which was released in 1992 on Rough Trade . Lavaly had previously left the band because of alcohol problems.

Last Days of Pompeii was well received by critics, the sound was reminiscent of Hart's previous band Hüsker Dü, but was more melodic and pompous. It was therefore called a rock opera by some ; this impression was reinforced by epic-sounding song titles such as Admiral of the Sea , Woton and Wernher von Braun . On tours through Europe and America, now with Mark Retish on drums, the band gained a loyal following.

In 1994 the album Nova Mob was released , on which Johnny Clegg and his wind group could be heard. In the meantime, Mark Retish had also dropped out and replaced by Steve Sutherland on drums; Chris Hesler was also newly accepted into the band as a guitarist. The album Nova Mob , however, left little impression and fell through the music critics. Since Tom Merkl was planning to move to his partner in the Netherlands , the band finally broke up after a last tour in 1997. Grant Hart was subsequently active again as a solo artist; After Nova Mob Merkl founded the band Iffy , which released an album in 2001.
