M. Walking on the Water is a band founded in Krefeld in 1985 .

style

The band called their style of music Short-Distance-Psycho-Folk . From the beginning, the accordion was an important distinguishing feature of their music.

Band history

In 1987 the band won the "Ruhr Rock Festival". Herbert Grönemeyer was a fan of this young band. Their first single, Party In The Cemetery , packed in a water cover, was released on their own. The first album M. Walking On The Water was released in 1988 on the Bremen label Fuego and was one of the most successful independent records to date. In the same year, The Waltz , a mini-LP with six waltzes, was also released .

The album Pluto was released in 1989 and was named December record of the month in Musikexpress / Sounds . In 1990 the band traveled to East Africa and gave concerts in Ethiopia , Tanzania , Kenya , Madagascar and Sudan on behalf of the Goethe Institute .

In 1990 M. Walking on the Water signed their first major contract with the Polydor and played their third album Elysian . It was the first band from the indie sector to make the leap into the regular charts. The single Poison stayed in some radio playlists for weeks. In the all-time best list (1974-1995) of the WDR 1 - Schlagerrallye , they are 86th with their hit Poison , tied with the popular bands BAP ( Verdamp long ago ) and Die Ärzte ( Westerland ).

1992 Dave Young ( Element of Crime ) produced the rougher and heavier CD Wood . Pictures Of An Exhibitionist was released in 1993. This EP contains covers of old hits by Genesis , King Crimson , Jethro Tull , Caravan (band) , Yes and Deep Purple . Markus Maria Jansen adorns the cover in Pink Floyd - cow position .

In 1994 the album Split was released. With La Louisianne , released in 1995 , M. Walking On The Water recorded an album with producer Dave Young in Lafayette (Louisiana), USA , which charted. In 1996 the band undertook their second tour for the Goethe-Institut, this time through Kazakhstan , Uzbekistan , Turkmenistan , Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan . 1997 File was released , some songs were produced by Andy Toma of Mouse on Mars . Using loops, samples and beats made the band sound more modern. After this sound carrier was released, Markus Maria Jansen and Mike Pelzer went about their own band projects. Jansen released several records with his band Jansen between 1998 and 2004 , Mike Pelzer recorded two albums with his band project Gloss . In particular, Jansen went on extensive concert tours with his band and was also active as a theater musician. In 2007 there were several appearances with the artists of the Theater du Pain , a surrealist-cabaret theater formation from Bremen with whom the two musicians had already performed in the 1980s. The group now performed under the name Orchester du Pain and also included old M.Walking On The Water classics in their program.

The band released nine albums and several singles. In 2007, M. Walking On The Water stood together on the same stage for the first time in ten years. Her tenth album Flowers For The Departed was released in January 2011 , which was accompanied by a tour.
