Benjamin Booker (born Benjamin Roderick Evans ; born June 14, 1989 in Virginia Beach , Virginia ) is an American musician , singer , songwriter and guitarist . He lives in New Orleans and counts The Gun Club , Blind Willie Johnson, and T. Rex as his greatest influences. His music has been described by the Chicago Tribune as "a raw mix of blues , boogie and soul ". The Independent described Booker's singing as "raw and soulful" and attested the music an enormous intensity, reminiscent of the first works of Kings of Leon and The Black Keys . For Spin , Booker portrays “intelligent, angry, explosive garage rock ”.

Career

Childhood and youth

Benjamin Booker was born in Virginia Beach , Virginia in 1989 . Some time later, he and his family moved to Tampa , Florida , where he regularly attended punk concerts as a teenager . He went to the Orange Grove Middle School, a magnet school for Performing Arts , followed by the Hillsborough High School, where the International Baccalaureate reached Accounts. Booker then studied journalism at the University of Florida in Gainesville , before working as a music journalist . After graduating in 2012, he moved to New Orleans and began working for the non-profit organization HandsOn New Orleans, playing his first small concerts on the side. In the same year he released his first EP Waiting Ones without a label . The song Have You Seen My Son was played shortly thereafter on the Sirius XM satellite radio station . In 2013 he began touring the United States and signed with ATO Records to work on his debut album .

2013–2016: debut album

Booker's first album, entitled Benjamin Booker , was recorded in December 2013 at The Bomb Shelter, an analog recording studio in Nashville and produced by Andrija Tokic ( Alabama Shakes , Hurray for the Riff Raff ). It was released on August 19, 2014 by ATO Records in the United States and Rough Trade Records in Europe. The first single Violent Shiver was released in April. The album reached the Top 10 on Billboard's "Alternative Albums and Independent Albums Charts," and Rolling Stone called Booker an artist to know. SPIN wrote that the debut album is a "contender for rock album of the year". Booker also had late night show appearances on Late Night with David Letterman , Conan and Later with Jools Holland .

Since the publication of Benjamin Booker , Booker has played a few concerts with Jack White and Courtney Barnett . Together with drummer Max Norton and bassist Alex Spoto, he also played international headlining concerts and performed at various music festivals such as the Newport Folk Festival , Austin City Limits Music Festival, Lollapalooza and the Haldern Pop Festival .

Since 2017: Witness

In March 2017, Booker announced his second album, entitled Witness . This was released again on June 2, 2017 on ATO Records. The American blues and soul singer Mavis Staples sings the chorus on the first single with the same title . In April, Right on You , the album's opening song, was released. The third song Believe premiered on Time on May 23rd.
