biography
The Black Keys consist of singer and guitarist Dan Auerbach and drummer Patrick Carney. The duo are from Akron , Ohio . The name comes from a friend of the band who called people he didn't like or who he said couldn't be trusted as "Black Keys". One connotation of the name "Black Keys" is the English name for the black keys on the piano .
The Black Keys are often compared to the White Stripes , as these were similarly a duo that made lo-fi music and made their breakthrough shortly before the Black Keys.
Great recording technology is not used for the recordings. So far, large studios have been avoided. Recording, production and mixing were done by the two musicians themselves. For example, their second album Thickfreakness was recorded in the basement of Carney's house on a Tascam 388 8 track recorder from the 1980s within 14 hours . The Black Keys therefore have an extremely rough and gruff sound. Background noises are also regularly found on their records. The duo are ostentatiously committed to this simple production technique. In the booklet of the Magic Potion CD, photos of their practice room, a laundry room, are shown.

The band receives regular critical acclaim for their work; also for her album Brothers from 2010. It reached number 3 on the Billboard Charts . At the 2011 Grammy Awards , it was named Best Alternative Music Album of the Year and Best Recording Package . They won a third Grammy with the song Tighten Up for the best rock performance with singing in a group . They were nominated five times in total.
On December 6, 2011, the album El Camino was released. The first single was Lonely Boy . The album went straight to number 2 on the US charts . "Music to cook crystal meth by" is how Spiegel praised this album. The Black Keys had broken through and their show at Madison Square Garden in New York City sold out in 15 minutes.
In early 2012, the band announced that they wanted to start working on a new album in February of the same year. This should be finished by the end of March. However, Auerbach and Carney wanted to take the summer off after a long tour. The album Turn Blue was released in May 2014 and the album Let's Rock on June 28, 2019 .
Work as a producer and studio musician
Dan Auerbach was involved in numerous albums as a producer and studio musician. As a producer, mixer, singer and guitarist he has worked on albums by Pretenders , Lana Del Rey , Bombino , Ray LaMontagne , Valerie June , Hanni El Khatib , Connie Britton and Nikki Lane, among others . Patrick Carney worked as a label operator (since 2005: Audio Eagle Records) and as a producer - including for the Canadian rock band The Sheepdogs.
