Awala-Yalimapo

Awala-Yalimapo is a French municipality with 1411 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the overseas department of French Guiana , near the border with Suriname .

geography

Awala-Yalimapo is located in the extreme northwest of the department, between the mouths of the Mana and the Maroni , not far from the coast. The nearest municipality of Mana is 22 km away and the nearest town of Saint-Laurent-du-Maroni is less than 60 km.

history

The municipality was created administratively on December 31, 1988 by detachment from the Mana commune , under pressure from the Indian Kalinas in the villages of Aouara and Hattes. These villages were formerly an external detention center of the prison in Saint-Laurent-du-Maroni .

  • Ten years after the detachment, in 1999, the population of Awala-Yalimapo was 887 people, but the annual growth rate is 3.4%.
  • Between 1982 and 1990, as a result of the military conflict in Suriname, refugees from the neighboring regions of Albina and Galibi streamed into Awala-Yalimapo, France.
  • In 2000, 60% of the population was under 20 years old.
