Papaichton (also Papaïchton ) is a French commune with 6668 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the overseas department of French Guiana . Papaichton only came into being as an independent community in 1993, when it broke away from Grand-Santi .

geography

The Papaichton community is located in western French Guiana, in northern South America . The Maroni River forms the western border with the State of Suriname . The neighboring communities are Grand-Santi in the north, Saül in the east and Maripasoula in the south. The highest point is Mount Kotika (730 m) in the northern part of the municipality. At 49 meters, the deepest point is the Maroni, at the point where it leaves Papaichton to the north.

Papaichton can only be reached by people via water, i.e. by driving up the Maroni river. The most common means of transport for this are the pirogues , a so-called dugout ship type.
