Maripasoula is a French commune with 13,227 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the overseas department of French Guiana in South America. With an area of 18,360 km² (roughly the size of Saxony ), Maripasoula is the largest municipality in France in terms of area .

Numerous rivers cross the municipality of Maripasoula, the most important of which is the Lawa , which later flows into the Maroni . Maripasoula is bordered by Brazil to the south, Suriname to the west, the communities of Papaichton and Saül to the north and Camopi to the east . The highest point is the Tabulaire (830 m) in the east of the municipality.
Population development
With 13,227 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017), Maripasoula is one of the medium-sized communities in French Guiana. Since the village was founded in 1947, the number of inhabitants has increased constantly. In the 1980s and 1990s in particular, the population rose sharply. In addition to the high birth rate in this region, this is also due to strong immigration from Asian and South American countries.

Illegal prospectors
Three French soldiers perished on July 17, 2019 in Maripasoula, on the border with Suriname. They died in an operation against illegal prospectors and while attempting to blow up a tunnel by inhaling fumes from poisonous gases.
