Macouria is a French commune with 14,202 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the overseas department of French Guiana in northern South America. Because the main settlement of the municipality is called Tonate and the municipality is also located there, the municipality is often also called Macouria-Tonate .
geography
The municipality has an area of 377.5 km² and is located on the Atlantic coast, northwest of the capital Cayenne . The largest settlement in the area is Tonate, but many more settlements have sprung up near the coast in recent years. The municipality name Macouria comes from the river of the same name, which flows through the municipality from the high mountains of Guayana and flows into the Atlantic at Tonate.
Population development
Macouria has a population of 14,202 (January 1, 2017), making it one of the larger parishes in French Guiana. In 1982 the community still had 446 inhabitants, after which Macouria experienced very steep population growth. This is because the municipality has been pursuing an expansion program since the early 1980s, as a result of which 1,800 new apartments have been built in the last 15 years alone. These plan buildings are mainly located in the Tonate part of the village. The great demand can be explained by the fact that the two main settlements Macouria and Tonate are very conveniently located on the Atlantic coast and in the agglomeration of Cayenne.
