Mana is a French commune with 10,894 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the overseas department of French Guiana .

history

In 1828 Anne-Marie Javouhey , the founder of the religious order of the Sœurs de Saint-Joseph de Cluny , founded Javouhey, later part of the Mana community. According to plans by the French government, the nuns were to build the agricultural basis for a settlement for white colonists and black African freed slaves.

geography

The city with 10,894 inhabitants is located in western French Guiana on the banks of the Maroni River not far from its mouth.

Mana also includes the village of Javouhey , which is mainly inhabited by H'mongs from Laos .

economy

Mana is the largest rice producer in the department and also exports to Suriname , the neighboring state of French Guiana. Rice is produced over a large area on drained swamps. Most of the trade takes place by air.
