Montsinéry-Tonnegrande is a French commune with 2589 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the overseas department of French Guiana near the Atlantic coast in South America. From 1969 to 1994 the municipality was still called Tonnegrande-Montsinéry .

geography

The community is located in the southwest of the capital Cayenne and consists of the two parts of the village Monsinéry and Tonnegrande. The municipality covers part of the Guayan mountainous country , which stretches across the whole of northern South America. In addition to large areas of tropical rainforest , the Montsinéry-Tonnegrande area also includes a large number of small rivers and streams that flow into the Atlantic a little later.

history

In Monsinéry-Tonnegrande there is a former penal colony (French: Bagne ), the Camp Crique Anguille , to which the Decauville Railway led to the Crique Anguille camp . From 1930 until the camp was closed in 1945, mainly convicts from Indochina (then a French colony ) were held there.
