The community consists of the two districts Remire and Montjoly and is located on the Cayenne peninsula. The municipal area also includes the five Îles de Remire , which are located around six kilometers off the coast in the Atlantic Ocean . The port of the capital Cayenne is on the territory of the municipality of Remire-Montjoly.

With 25,122 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017), Remire-Montjoly is the fifth largest city in French Guiana. As part of the agglomeration of Cayenne, the population of the community rose sharply, especially in the 1980s. In 1961, Remire-Montjoly had a population of just 1181.
