Paul Schulmeister (born September 17, 1942 in Vienna ; † November 5, 2011 there ) was an Austrian journalist .

Life

Schulmeister was a son of the journalist Otto Schulmeister and brother of the economist Stephan Schulmeister . The doctor of law began his journalistic career in 1968 with the German daily newspaper Die Welt . From 1972 to 2004 he worked for the ORF , including 15 years as a Germany correspondent in Bonn and Berlin . From 1984 he was head of the foreign editorial office, moderator and regular commentator at ORF television, and from 1991 also deputy editor-in-chief. After his retirement in 2004 he worked as a freelance journalist and publicist in Vienna.

From 1985 to 1988 he was President of the Catholic Action Austria and from 2005 to 2008 President of the Catholic Academic Association of Austria.

Concerned by the anti-Semitic side effects observed in the course of the “Waldheim Affair” in Austria, Schulmeister, as President of the KAÖ, pushed the Christian-Jewish efforts towards understanding between 1986 and 1988 with a series of high-profile meetings called “Schalom für Österreich”. Because of these impulses, Christian-Jewish encounters have taken place regularly in several dioceses in Austria.

In 2006, under the impression of the " Danish cartoon dispute " , he initiated the Christian and Muslim platform together with the former ORF director of the Religion Department, Peter Pawlowsky , and Heinz Nussbaumer and Tarafa Baghajati . In continuation of this initiative, the platform was constituted as an association in 2014.

In 1993 he received the state prize for journalistic achievements in the interests of national intellectual defense . Schulmeister was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Order of Gregorius (Cavaliere dell'Ordine di San Gregorio Magno) in 2011 for his work in promoting understanding between religions. He was u. a. also bearer of the Golden , the Great Decoration for Services to the Republic of Austria and the Cross of Merit 1st Class of the Federal Republic of Germany .

He died of cancer and was buried in the Neustifter Friedhof (12-2-20) in Vienna.
