Stephan Schulmeister (born August 26, 1947 ) is an Austrian lawyer and economist .

Life

The son of journalist Otto Schulmeister and brother of journalist Paul Schulmeister worked from 1972 to 2012 as a research assistant at the Austrian Economic Research Institute (WIFO) in the field of "Medium-term forecast, long-term economic development, financial markets and international trade". His areas of work are industrial economics, innovation and international competition, foreign trade and international economic relations, financial markets and corporate strategies.

Schulmeister was a scholarship holder at several organizations outside Austria, such as New York University and the University of New Hampshire .

In his numerous publications, among other things, Schulmeister expresses a decided criticism of neoliberalism (which he describes as "market religiosity") and calls for alternative proposals such as a pan-European New Deal , so Schulmeister also signed (together with 300 intellectuals) in January 2015 support for the socialist SYRIZA - Movement "in the fight against the wrong economic policy of Europe".

Economic position

Schulmeister developed a model of long political and economic development cycles of modern capitalist market economies, in which two social power constellations and the game arrangements based on them alternate: real capitalism and financial capitalism. The long upswing is determined by an alliance of interests between real capital and work against finance capital and a "real capitalist" game arrangement based on it, the long downturn by an alliance between real and financial capital against work and a "finance capitalist" game arrangement based on it.

Although schoolmaster a New Deal recommends for Europe in the Keynesian sense, one can attribute to him nontrivial Keynesianism, as much he recognizes the since the 1970s in relation downward trend in real economic business investment.

Private households continued to save diligently, their surplus remained high. The state thus had to "suffer" a higher deficit in the long term (due to higher unemployment and lower tax revenues) - the sum of all balances is zero. "
