The Keynes Society is a German, non-profit association that promotes the discussion and dissemination of the economic knowledge of John Maynard Keynes and the theories based on them . The association organizes scientific conferences every year and awards three prizes worth 500 to 1000 euros for business journalism, scientific journalism and the promotion of young talent at irregular intervals.

history

The Keynes Society was founded on December 3rd, 2003 by thirteen professors of economics and has been a registered association since April 5th, 2004. The Berlin tax office has granted it non-profit status. Jürgen Kromphardt was the founding chairman until 2013 . The other founding members were: Ingo Barens, Volker Caspari , Harald Hagemann , Gustav Horn , Peter Kalmbach , Heiko Körner , Hagen Krämer , Hans-Jürgen Krupp , Hajo Riese , Heinz-Peter Spahn , Hans-Michael Trautwein and Gert G. Wagner .

Harald Hagemann was chairman from 2013 to 2019, and since then - like Jürgen Kromphardt since 2013 - he has been honorary chairman. Gustav Horn was elected chairman of the general assembly in February. In addition to him, Jochen Hartwig is deputy chairman and treasurer. Camille Logeay and Bedia Sahin are also members of the board .

The number of members has risen to 167.

activity

The Keynes Society believes that information about Keynes and his theories is urgently needed, especially for the younger generation of students, because in newspapers, textbooks and in teaching at many universities - especially German-speaking - the Keynesian economy and the theory of Keynes are neglected and are often watered down or falsified. It is often wrongly presented as a special theory that is only valid for deep depression or only in the very short term. As a result, Keynes' theory is by no means familiar to every business school graduate.

For these reasons, the Keynes Society wants to give all interested parties access to Keynes via the Internet so that they can form their own judgment. Your most important tool for this is the information you offer on the Internet. In addition, the society organizes scientific conferences and awards prizes for economic research work and for business journalism. In addition, the company has the claim to work on the weak points of the Keynesian theory building.

Internet presence

On its website, the Keynes Society draws attention to recently published publications on the subjects of Keynesianism and economics .

It also provides information about the life and work of Keynes as well as in detail about his main work from 1936 General Theory of Employment, Interest and Money . There she will also give a lecture on neoclassical criticism and counter-criticism , the monetarist counter-revolution as well as further developments of Keynesianism and current economic policy disputes.

reception

The Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung mentions Keynesianism in its Lexicon Social Market Economy : “While some people wanted to tear the pages with Keynes out of textbooks, Keynesianism has been relevant again since the banking and financial crisis. In Germany there is a Keynes Society that does interesting further research. "

In October 2009 the University of Hohenheim University of Karlsruhe - Technology and Economy organized a joint conference between its Political Economy Working Group and the Keynes Society, because “even experts who until recently rejected any elements of Keynesian economic policy (...) suddenly found themselves again refer to the conceptions of the British economist ”in order to discuss, among other things, what“ the Keynes teachings can contribute to explaining and combating the current economic crisis ”and what extensions and adaptations of Keynesian theory are necessary in the light of recent developments.

Die Zeit reported in March 2007 that the founders of the German Keynes Society Jürgen Kromphardt and Stephanie Schneider had reworked the German translation of the General Theory of Employment, Interest and Money by Keynes, correcting outdated terms. This edition was published in 2006 by Duncker & Humblot in Berlin.

Thomas Fricke, chief economist of the European Climate Foundation , wrote on 18 February 2013 at the award ceremony of the Prize for economic journalism of Keynes Society in its Internet portal Wirtschaftswunder a satirical article on saving disposition zeal "committed (r) German (r) mainstream economic thinkers ".

The Ernst Klett publishing house for school books also refers on its website with link recommendations on economic policy in an international context to the sub-area of economic policy conceptions in the discussion primarily to the Keynes Society, as it provides “extensive information on John Maynard Keynes, the most important economist of the 20th century ”.

In the journal Sozialismus.de on August 15, 2019, Michael Wendl recommends the SPD to reclaim the arguments and analyzes of the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung and Hans-Böckler-Stiftung with their Institute for Macroeconomics and Business Cycle Research (IMK) and the Keynes- Society in their publications.
