Jürgen Kromphardt (born November 25, 1933 in Kiel ) is a German economist .

Life

From 1952 he studied economics (VWL) in Göttingen and Kiel. In 1957 he completed his doctorate as Dr. rer. pole. at the University of Kiel (with Erich Schneider ). From 1958 to 1965 and 1967 to 1968 he worked in the EEC Commission in Luxembourg and Brussels (Statistical Office, General Directorate Economy and Finance) and completed his habilitation in 1968 at the University of Münster with a thesis on structural change and income distribution .

From 1968 to 1980 he taught as a full professor of economics at the University of Gießen , and from 1980 at the Technical University of Berlin . From March 1999 to February 2004 he was a member of the Advisory Board for the assessment of macroeconomic developments . He was replaced by Peter Bofinger , who took his place.

During his teaching activities and in his scientific publications, Jürgen Kromphardt often dealt with the controversies surrounding the various economic theories. In the Advisory Council he was seen as a representative of a theory that was not exclusively supply-oriented.

The economist is a committed supporter of a Keynesian -oriented economic policy , who is critical of the prevailing opinion in economics.

After Kromphardt's retirement , 13 economists founded the Keynes Society in 2003 , of which Kromphardt was first chairman until 2013; then honorary chairman.

After retirement

In 2005, Kromphardt and Stephanie Schneider translated Keynes' main work, General Theory of Employment, Interest and Money . Until then, there was only one translation from 1936. The translator at the time, Fritz Waeger, did not understand some of the ideas that were completely new at the time and were difficult to understand even in English; In addition, technical terms have become established in economics since the book was published that Waeger could not have foreseen in 1936.

The result of Kromphardt and Scheider's work, the “tenth, improved edition” of the general theory , was published by Duncker & Humblot in 2006 , as was the translation from 1936. The book initially sold slowly. With the outbreak of the financial crisis since 2007 , interest increased, as did the bankruptcy of Lehman Brothers on September 15, 2008. In 2009 the eleventh edition appeared .
