Hans-Michael Trautwein (* 1957 ) is a German economist and university professor.

Life

Hans-Michael Trautwein, born in 1957, studied economics at the University of Bremen and was born in Sweden in 1985 with his dissertation Employee Fund - the third way? PhD . From 1985 to 1990 he was academic advisor at the University of Lüneburg and then until 1999 assistant to Harald Hagemann at the University of Hohenheim . There he was in 1996 with the book Money, Interest and Prices of Goods. Habilitated on financial statements of the money supply . From 1999 to 2000 he represented the chair for economic theory in Hohenheim and has been professor for international economic relations at the Carl von Ossietzky University of Oldenburg since 2000 and was the dean of the faculty from 2007 to 2009 . In 2003 Trautwein was a founding member of the Keynes Society . From 2010 to 2014 he was a member of the extended board of the Verein für Socialpolitik and chairman of the committee for the history of economics. Since 2014 he has been co-editor of the European Journal of the History of Economic Thought (EJHET) and from 2016 to 2018 he was President of the European Society for the History of Economic Thought (ESHET). In his “Address to the President” he took the position that, given the fragmentation in economics, the history of economic thought was the place for the “last generalists ”. He has been chairman of the doctoral funding committee of the Evangelisches Studienwerk Villigst since 2009 (as of November 2019).

His research focuses on the history of economic thought , particularly macroeconomics and monetary theory . He dealt with the theory of (involuntary) unemployment with Knut Wicksell (1851-1926), Gustav Cassel (1866-1945) and Joseph Alois Schumpeter (1883-1950). He discussed the money and business cycle theory of Friedrich August von Hayek (1899–1992), the significance of the work of Gottfried Haberler (1900–1995) and Hans Neisser (1895–1975) on business cycle theory for the modern macroeconomics of open economies and the economic theories of the Sweden Erik Robert Lindahl . He also examined the significance of economic crises in Knut Wicksell's work and compared his main work, Geldzins und Güterpreise (1898), with the new neoclassical synthesis by Michael Woodford (* 1955).

With Bo Sandelin and Richard Wundrak, he published a short history of economic thought in Swedish in 1995 , which was published in English in 2002 and in Esperanto in 2013 . He contributed the chapter on monetary macroeconomics . In 2008 he published a textbook on macroeconomics .
