Harald Schumann (* 1957 in Kassel ) is a German author and investigative journalist . He has been an editor at Tagesspiegel since 2004 and has published several non-fiction books as well as several documentary films .

Live and act

Schumann studied in Marburg and Berlin initially Social Sciences and later landscape planning and graduated as engineer from. From 1984 to 1986 he was an editor at the Berliner tageszeitung ; From 1986 to 2004 he wrote for Spiegel for years as head of politics at Spiegel Online , as a science editor and as a capital city correspondent.

Schumann became famous in the late 1990s with the bestseller Die Globalisierungsfalle , written by him and Hans-Peter Martin , which has appeared in 24 languages.

In the spring of 2004, Schumann left the mirror in protest against the management style of the then editor-in-chief Stefan Aust . It was about a cover story that had already been delivered about the control of energy policy by the electricity companies and the importance of wind energy , which he had written together with Gerd Rosenkranz . Aust rejected the story and had Schumann's colleagues write another article with a different tenor. Schumann then switched to the Tagesspiegel . In the Tagesspiegel he mainly writes about questions of economic power.

In 2016, Schumann and journalists from eight European countries founded the research association Investigate Europe , which jointly researches relevant topics across Europe and publishes the results in up to fifteen countries. His research into the hidden power of the financial group BlackRock in Europe was awarded the Hans Matthöfer Prize for business journalism in 2019 . Investigate Europe's research team currently (as of February 27, 2020) consists of nine journalists.

Schumann lives in Berlin.

Documentaries

State secret bank rescue (2013)

In 2013 Schumann published the results of a “research trip” in which he wanted to find out who had profited from the bank bailout and criticized the secrecy of central banks and politicians . The trip was the subject of the almost one-hour television documentary Staatsgeheimnis Bankenrettung , which he realized together with his co-author and director Arpad Bondy as an RBB / Arte co-production. The authors found amazing answers to the question of where the billions in government aid programs really went to during the euro crisis .

Power without Control - The Troika (2015)

His documentary film Power Without Control - The Troika with Árpád Bondy , shot for ARD and Arte, is about the euro crisis program. Among other things, he deals with the consequences of the austerity policy in Greece.

The Microsoft Dilemma (2018)

The film was produced by RBB together with journalists from Investigate Europe and the editors of the computer magazine c't for the joint ARD program. The first broadcast took place on February 19, 2018. The documentation is based on research, the publication of which Schumann had already started about a year earlier in an article in the Tagesspiegel . The film examines the de facto monopoly of Microsoft products in the public sector in Europe and focuses on problems of public procurement law , data security and data protection . The alternative to this is seen in the use of free and open source software .

Since 2005 he has been on the jury of the Otto Brenner Prize for Critical Journalism of IG Metall .
