Otto Brenner Prize

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Otto Brenner Prize (in its own spelling : Otto Brenner Prize ) is a German journalist prize that has been awarded annually by the Otto Brenner Foundation ( IG Metall's science foundation ) since 2005 . Both the foundation and the journalist award are named in memory of Otto Brenner, who has been chairman of the union for many years .

Goals of the competition

According to the Otto Brenner Foundation, the aim of the competition is to "promote critical journalism" through:

  • To bring socially relevant, but insufficiently treated topics into the public eye in terms of their importance.
  • To encourage journalists to ask uncomfortable questions and to clearly identify grievances regardless of the possible consequences. This expressly includes a critical re-evaluation of supposedly known developments.
  • To award prizes that set themselves apart from the masses through independent and, above all, thorough research and that set standards in language, style and presentation.
  • To promote critical journalism - “thorough research instead of ordered truths”.

Formal requirements for applicants

It is required that the media verifiably published the award-winning text in German during the year. The affiliation to the media segment, department or genre is just as irrelevant as the length or the special topic of the text. In order to guarantee exactly the same conditions, the official application form must be completed. This is only possible online on the official Brenner Prize website. Anyone can make suggestions, only the deadline must be adhered to.

The three research grants of 5,000 euros each are awarded for convincing descriptions of the planned work.

Jury and awards

Among the seven jurors are well-known German journalists: Volker Lilienthal ( University of Hamburg ), Brigitte Baetz , Henriette Löwisch ( German School of Journalism ), Heribert Prantl ( SZ ), Isabel Schayani ( WDR ) and Harald Schumann ( Der Tagesspiegel ). The seventh member of the jury, Joerg Hofmann , representing the behind the Otto Brenner Foundation standing IG Metall .

Former jury members are Berthold Huber , Bettina Gaus ( taz ), Thomas Leif † , Sonia Seymour Mikich , Jürgen Peters , Ines Pohl ( DW ) and Detlef Wetzel

The prize is endowed with a total of 47,000 euros in prize money, which is divided among several winners: 10,000 for the first prize, 5,000 for the second, 3,000 for the third-place winner, 2,000 for the newcomer prize winner and 2,000 for a "media project". In addition, three are research - scholarships each worth € 5,000. In 2007, the Otto Brenner “Special” Prize was awarded for the first time for the best analysis (leading article, commentary, essay). It is endowed with 10,000 euros.
