Bastian Obermayer
Bastian Obermayer (born December 10, 1977 in Rosenheim ) is a German journalist ( Süddeutsche Zeitung ) and author . He was instrumental in the journalistic processing of the ADAC scandal as well as the affairs of the Panama and Paradise Papers and the Ibiza affair .
He has won numerous awards for his reporting and investigative work, including the Pulitzer Prize as a member and co-author of the Panama Papers team of the International Network of Investigative Journalists .
Life and work
Bastian Obermayer was born in Rosenheim in 1977 and graduated from high school there. He studied political science, history and American studies at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich . From 2002 to 2003 he attended the German School of Journalism .
From 2005 to 2012 he was editor of the Süddeutsche Zeitung Magazin . There he wrote long reports, including about a heart transplant, the status of justice in Germany, abuse at Ettal Abbey and a large portrait of Lothar Matthäus. His reports have received numerous awards, and some of them have resulted in books.
Since 2012 Obermayer has been an editor in the Investigative Research section of the Süddeutsche Zeitung; In 2015 he became deputy head of department. At the beginning of 2018 he was promoted to head of department; he leads the department with Nicolas Richter . In 2014, together with Uwe Ritzer, he uncovered tampering with the awarding of the ADAC “Yellow Angel” prize and other irregularities at the German automobile club, for which he received several awards.
In the following years he worked repeatedly on international collaborations of the International Network of Investigative Journalists and coordinated these together with Frederik Obermaier for the Süddeutsche Zeitung, for example offshore leaks , Luxembourg leaks and Swiss leaks in the summer of 2012 . The projects won numerous international awards.
Obermayer achieved international fame primarily through his participation in the Panama Papers published in April 2016 . Media such as the New York Times , the Washington Post , CNN or The New Yorker reported on or interviewed Bastian Obermayer and Frederik Obermaier about how the leak had ended up with them. The two researchers were at the center of the global investigation as the ones who shared the 11.5 million files with the ICIJ . Almost 400 reporters from around 80 countries spent a year researching the mountain of data. As a result of the publications, the Prime Minister of Iceland and the Prime Minister of Pakistan, among others, lost their offices.
In the summer of 2016, the streaming platform Netflix claims to have acquired the rights to Obermayer's book Panama Papers. The story of a worldwide unveiling .
This was followed in November 2017 by the publication of the Paradise Papers , a second global investigation that was again based on data that had been leaked to Obermayer and Frederik Obermaier . Again it was about the role of the offshore world and the letterbox companies, again numerous politicians, celebrities and large multinational companies were to be found in the data leak. In addition to The Guardian and the BBC, the Paradise Papers also included the New York Times as research partners for the first time .
After the murder of the Maltese investigative journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia in October 2017, Obermayer, together with Laurent Richard and the organization Forbidden Stories, set up the “Daphne Project” to continue investigating the murdered people. In the end, teams from the Guardian, Reuters , Le Monde and the weekly newspaper Die Zeit also took part . For it was Forbidden Stories , where Obermayer holding the office of the Secretary General in May 2019 the European Press Prize .
In May 2019, Bastian Obermayer again triggered the so-called Ibiza affair with Frederik Obermaier and Leila Al-Serori , Oliver Das Gupta and Peter Münch , and thus a state crisis in Austria . The SZ team, together with the news magazine Der Spiegel, published the research on a secretly recorded video that forced the then Austrian Vice Chancellor Heinz-Christian Strache to resign within less than 24 hours. Strache had fallen into a trap: in a villa on Ibiza, he had promised a supposed niece of a Russian oligarch that he would get government contracts against campaign support and explained an apparently illegal party donation system. In the course of the Ibiza affair, the Austrian government of Chancellor Sebastian Kurz broke up within a few days . New elections took place on September 29, 2019 .
