Armin Wolf (born August 19, 1966 in Innsbruck ) is an Austrian journalist and television presenter . Since 2002 he has been the moderator of the news journal Zeit im Bild 2 (ZiB 2) and since 2010 also deputy editor-in-chief of ORF television information .

Life

Education and career

The son of a caretaker, works council and Christian trade unionist and a food seller completed a commercial training at a commercial academy in Innsbruck . As a co-founder of a school newspaper , he made his first attempts at journalistic writing there. He was on the board of the student union and a member of the JVP , from which he left at the age of 18. According to his own statements, this youthful engagement was important for the development of his understanding of politics. With the student council, he took part in rhetoric training and writing workshops and was able to make comments on the curriculum at the commercial schools, which were also implemented. Through the JVP he was able to participate in the meetings of the Tyrolean ÖVP and learned how politics works at the grassroots level and the thinking of party officials.

Immediately after graduating from high school in 1985, Wolf began working as a freelancer in the radio editorial team in the Tyrolean regional studio of ORF . In 1988 he moved to Vienna for the radio station Ö1 , where he worked as a foreign policy journalist for seven years (including 1991/92 as a USA correspondent in Washington, DC ). In 1995 he switched to television as the editor of Zeit im Bild 2 and was editor-in-chief at ZiB 3 from 1998 to 2001 , which he also helped develop.

Wolf finished his part-time studies in political science (with a combination of sociology , pedagogy , contemporary history and media studies as a minor) at the University of Vienna in December 1999 with a master’s thesis on “The victory is the image”. The staging of politics in the media society. In 2005 he received his doctorate at the University of Innsbruck with a dissertation on prominent career changers in politics , which was published in 2007 under the title Image-Politik. Prominent career changers as testimonials of politics was published.

In 2010, during a nine-month educational leave with a grant, Wolf completed an Executive MBA course at the Berlin School of Creative Leadership with a thesis on young audiences and political information (“News kind of comes to me…” Young Audiences, Mass Media, and Political) Information). In the past he was a lecturer at the Universities of Innsbruck and Vienna, where he gave lectures on political communication and journalism.

Wolf has been presenting the ZiB 2 since summer 2002 (first alternating with Ingrid Thurnher , later with Marie-Claire Zimmermann and since 2010 with Lou Lorenz-Dittlbacher ). From 2002 to 2005, he also moderated the discussion program Frankly Said, in 2005 and 2012 he led the traditional summer talks with the chairmen of the parliamentary parties. In particular, one scene of the conversation with Heinz-Christian Strache not only became a classic on the video platform Youtube , but was also brought up again by Strache in the 2012 issue: Strache claimed in advance in his Facebook presence that Wolf had confronted him with an untruth in 2005. Wolf, for his part, provided counter-evidence in his weblog, which prompted Strache to make a half-hearted apology the next day, again in his Facebook account.

In 2017, the English-language political magazine Politico voted Armin Wolf at number 11 of a list of 28 personalities "who will move Europe the most in 2018".

Journalistic style and criticism

Armin Wolf is best known for its live - interviews known politicians in the meantime worldwide. He is respected and has received numerous awards for his interview style, but he is also feared and widely criticized for it.

Michael Frank characterized Wolf in a report about the Vienna Opera Ball 2008 in the Süddeutsche Zeitung as a "TV presenter with a biting wit and inquisitorial questioning technique taps into the hollowness of politics." Hans-Peter Siebenhaar put it in the German Handelsblatt in 2017 : "Armin Wolf is the journalistic icon of the ORF. In ZIB 2, the news flagship of public broadcasting in Austria, the popular journalist probes the politicians of the Alpine republic until it hurts. The winner of the Hanns-Joachim-Friedrichs-Preis does not allow himself to be fobbed off with the null statements, empty phrases and excuses of his studio guests in his dreaded interviews. He asks. He also asks the same question three times if he has to. Not everyone in Austria likes that, especially traditionally not the members of the government. "According to the English-language political magazine Politico , Wolf has established himself as" one of the most capable (and most feared) political journalists in Europe, who understands everyone from prime ministers to local politicians makes the lights of his TV studio sweat. "

Wolf has been active on Twitter since 2009 and has a large number of followers there. In a panel discussion on the occasion of the publication of a study at the University of Vienna on the subject of “Twitter politics” in 2012, Wolf, who has been tweeting since February 2009 and how “[all] discussants […] is firmly anchored in the 'Twitteria'”, said: “A An editor who does not have a Twitter account and does not at least use it as a research source is like a journalist without a cell phone. ”Journalist Christian Ortner ironically dubbed Wolf in the daily Die Presse as“ the spiritual head of Vienna's Twitteria ”.

After Susanne Winter, member of the National Council , was excluded from the FPÖ in November 2015 because of her express consent to an anti-Semitic posting on Facebook that " Zionist money Jews" were to blame for the refugee crisis , she was then a guest at Wolf in the ZIB 2 studio, who confronted you with this and other “numerous conspiracy theories” on your Facebook page to ask you to resign your mandate in parliament with the provocative question “What has someone like you lost in parliament [?]”. Wolf received a lot of approval for the style of this interview, but there was also criticism. The SPÖ member of the National Council, Daniela Holzinger, described Winters Posting as “unacceptable, racist and shameful”, but criticized the interview as “low-level” and “neutral journalism” was out of the question. The former Green MEP Johannes Voggenhuber described the interview as “ lynch justice ” and “lustfully staged media execution”. Wolf protested against Voggenhuber's allegations and accused him of spreading "his own facts" through the interview. Wolf by no means, as Voggenhuber claims, dubbed Winter a “parasite”. Wolf received support from the ZiB editor's representative Dieter Bornemann : Journalists are not supposed to be just giving keywords during interviews, and critical and tough questions are of course allowed.

The media entrepreneur Christian W. Mucha and publisher of the monthly magazine ExtraDienst (ED) accused Wolf 2017 of “arrogant journalism” and “partiality”. The latter also arises from the fact that he has been deciding himself for years who to look good or bad. Wolf reports tendentiously and pretends to be independent. Mucha asked whether you have to “step really hard on everyone you get on the show?” The majority of ZIB consumers, “in front of whom he spreads out and celebrates his importance three times a week, are disgusted by the spectacle that he delivers."

The media psychologist Peter Vitouch , who is a deputy chairman of the ORF Public Council for the SPÖ , accused Wolf, with whom he was a guest on the discussion program Punkt one (Radio Ö1 ) on May 19, 2017, of “destructive journalism "" And to convey with body language and tone of voice that politicians are under "general suspicion" and bad people. The reason for this discussion was a ZIB-2 interview on May 9, 2017 with the then Vice Chancellor Reinhold Mitterlehner . In the introduction, Wolf had the film title Django - The Gravedigger are already fading in for "only eleven seconds counted" . Mitterlehner, who made his couleur and nickname " Django " public when he took office, announced the next day that he would step down from all offices on May 10 and made Wolf jointly responsible for the interview with the moderation.

The former head of the ORF regional studio in Salzburg (until the end of 2016) Roland Brunhofer , a "staunch social democrat", was harshly criticized in his acceptance speech at a farewell event that he organized with his employer and what he believed to be the prevailing political situation there. Regarding Wolf, without naming him, he accused the ORF of conducting “political interrogation” late in the evening. Thomas Prantner , deputy director of the ORF for technology, online and new media, criticized in 2017 told the magazine profile , that it [was] "unreasonable for a public radio when the TV studio like an interrogation room or dock works. Politicians have to put up with critical questions, but it always depends on the tone and style of the question. "

Cathrin Kahlweit, on the other hand, found in the Süddeutsche Zeitung (April 2017) that Wolf was a “figurehead” for ORF, whose “tightly conducted interviews” at “journalism schools” are considered exemplary. She attributed the criticism of him to the fact that he was "persistently unpopular with the parties that have a decisive influence on the ORF". Wolf asked them "too critical - and too persistent". Brunhofer is an SPÖ man, while Prantner owes his position to the FPÖ. The ORF editors 'council opposed Prantner and was surprised that “the technical editors feel responsible for journalistic content:' Do you seriously want to go back to the times when journalists first had to submit their questions to politicians or were even required to do so, What had to be asked? '” Meret Baumann in the Neue Zürcher Zeitung also sees Wolf as the“ figurehead ”of his station and the background to the criticism of him from the SPÖ , FPÖ and ÖVP is that these parties want to bring the ORF under their control.

Falter editor-in-chief Armin Thurnher defended Wolf in a comment in May 2017: “Wolf's style can indeed be argued, and also about the role he plays as Austro-Titan in social media, certainly to the annoyance of the deputy online director . With all this, there should be no dispute that Wolf saves the ORF by doing what a democratic audience needs: He asks questions that are not pleasant to the powerful. And he does something that is essentially not a 'product'. He makes good journalism. ”On the occasion of the awarding of the renowned Axel Corti Prize in June 2017, Wolf explained the criticism of his style with the efforts of the parties represented on the ORF Foundation Board to redesign the ORF in their own way, and said:“ Politicians and parties don't have to be satisfied with ORF, our audience has to be satisfied ”.

Niki Lauda , who had been asked by him in May 2017 before a ZiB interview with Wolf to take off his cap with the sponsor's logo of the Novomatic gaming company , attacked Wolf sharply, called him a "dork" and accused him of a lack of fairness in dealing with guests. Wolf justified his request by saying that he does not like gambling. Wolf denied Lauda's portrayal and explained that he, like every guest who appears in the ZiB2 studio with large sponsor logos, “politely asked whether it might be possible for him to take off his cap for the interview because it was for the ZiB has a strict ban on advertising and we can have problems with sponsor logos. ”It doesn't matter which company logo it is. “Lauda said no, that was the end of the issue. 'We had a completely problem-free, interesting interview […]. Lauda looked satisfied, so was I. ' Wolf justifies himself: 'By the way, I would not have asked him if he had not appeared several times in public without Kapperl in the months before, including at the Golden Globes.' ... "

The then Vice Chancellor and FPÖ Federal Party Chairman Heinz-Christian Strache shared a picture of Wolf in the ZiB studio on Facebook on February 13, 2018 and wrote: "There is a place where lies and fake news become news". The ORF under its general director Alexander Wrabetz took the split posting as defamation and discrediting of its 800 journalists. The broadcaster sued Strache and also reserved the right to claim damages. ORF also sued Facebook because the company refused to delete the post shared by Strache. Wolf, who also sued Strache, reached an out-of-court settlement with him on March 13, 2018. According to the court settlement, Strache had undertaken to "refrain from making these or similar allegations", in addition to paying the procedural costs and donating 10,000 euros in compensation to a charitable organization via an advertisement in the Kronen Zeitung and a Facebook entry apologize "to Armin Wolf and the ORF staff for this incorrect statement". It continues: “I expressly state that I am Dr. Armin Wolf has always experienced a highly correct and professional journalist. ”In addition,“ I [Strache] therefore withdraw as untrue ”.

In April 2019, Wolf conducted an interview with Harald Vilimsky (FPÖ). Against the background of numerous right-wing extremist statements by some high-ranking FPÖ functionaries and in particular a xenophobic poem in the party sheet of the FPÖ Braunau in Upper Austria, Wolf confronted his guest with a cartoon by the Styrian FPÖ youth association. Headed with the slogan Tradition beats Migration , it showed "in cheerful colors a young, white-skinned couple, who are surrounded by gray, ugly grinning figures with long noses, which clearly ridicule Muslim people". The poster was juxtaposed with a caricature from the Nazi propaganda paper Der Stürmer . Vilimsky defended the portrayal and said of the comparison with the striker caricature during the live broadcast: "This is something that cannot go without consequences". In an interview with a tabloid, he suggested Wolf's resignation. His statements were viewed by the media and journalists' associations as a threat to the free press and an attempt to exert influence. The chairwoman of the GPA-djp union , Barbara Teiber , announced that it was "devastating and highly questionable in terms of democratic politics ," how individual FPÖ politicians had been attacking ORF journalists for some time. In the opinion of Rainer Stadler in the NZZ , the case is “a further example of how Nazi comparisons are all too carelessly drawn in the political and media debate.” Stephan Löwenstein commented in the FAZ : “The FPÖ acts like a populist opposition, but she is government. Such behavior is incompatible with this responsibility. [...] The objectionable poster is actually bad, even worse than the Braunau 'rat poem', from which the FPÖ leadership distanced themselves in unison. "
