Zeit im Bild (in the ZIB logo , otherwise also ZiB ) has been the name for the nationally and internationally oriented television news programs of the Austrian Broadcasting Corporation since December 1955 .

history

At the beginning of the year, television was broadcast three times a week in Austria and six times a week from January 1, 1957. For the first time, a picture of the day appeared on television on November 26, 1955 at 8:30 p.m. - the only broadcast that day .

The story of the show called Zeit im Bild ( ZIB, often also written as ZiB ) began on December 5, 1955. On that day, Die Zeit im Bild was broadcast at 5:00 pm and 7:00 pm .

Based on the model of the BBC's Nine O'Clock News, the program was conceived from the start as a speaking program, with a newscaster reading the news in front of the camera; it lasted about 30 minutes. The program title “Zeit im Bild” goes back to the television journalist and later ORF general manager Teddy Podgorski :

“I would like royalties from the ZiB for the title! The name is really nothing special. Back then I hardly dared propose it because it sounds so old-fashioned. TV boss Freund said: Well, it's not good, but let's leave it for now. And as you can see: an Austrian provisional solution lasts a long time. "

- Teddy Podgorski : Interview in the Wiener Zeitung , February 2012

As of February 3, 1975, the news broadcast in the 1st TV program (FS 1) was renamed at 7.30 p.m. to Time in Figure 1 and the time in Figure 2 in the 2nd program (FS 2) was added. Depending on the preliminary program, they had different starting times and different lengths. The ZIB 1 was conceived from the beginning as a "news show" or "studio show". Information was mixed with entertainment, not all elements of the reporting had to be included and instead of many short information units, a longer and more thorough background reporting was aimed for. There was an overview of the news and the "Topic of the day" was then covered in more detail. At ZIB 2 , not speakers but moderators were responsible, who were largely responsible for their own actions. The blue screen technique was also introduced at the time.

From October 22, 1979, the time in image 1 was switched through in both channels, which was to remain that way for almost three decades - until 2007. The ZIB 2 has now been under the program title Ten ten broadcast (21:50 to 22:20). This was now a conventional late night news program with a background character - with no studio actions. In addition to the current reports, explanatory and informative background reports were offered. Compared to ZIB 1 , there was more space for film reports, live interviews in the studio or interviews. Teleprompters have also been used.

In 1984 a news desk ("Newsroom") was set up, in which all persons involved in the production of news were gathered in one room in order to enable better internal communication. Following the international trend, pure speakers were dispensed with and only professional journalists were used as moderators. The title melody previously used in variations has been replaced by variations of the Danube Waltz triad.

From March 26, 1984, ten to ten was renamed back to time in picture 2 and the broadcast date was moved to 9:15 p.m. (Monday to Friday). The broadcast was shortened by ten minutes to 20 minutes in favor of expanded cultural reporting with the culture journal . The main intention was to bring news that could no longer be taken into account in ZIB 1 . Robert Hochner became head of the show. From September 28, 1987, the broadcast of ZIB 2 was postponed to the starting time of 10:00 p.m., which is still valid today.

In 1990 a new concept was designed for ZIB 2 : The program should be a balanced mix of news, background information and entertaining elements. Live elements were given particular importance, and the studio character was once again one of the main design features. Until then, all the editorial departments had been merged, but now there was a separate deputy editor-in-chief for each program. On January 1, 1991, ZIB 1 was renamed Zeit im Bild, issue 19:30 and ZIB 2 was renamed Zeit im Bild, issue 22:00 . This should make it clear that there is no longer any preference or disadvantage due to ratings like 1 or 2 .

From 1998 to 2007 there was a third editorial office for the daily time in picture 3 at midnight.

The 1984 newsroom was geared towards producing two newscasts a day. After the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 , reports were reported continuously for 43 hours; in 2001 there were a total of 120 ZIB special programs. A new newsroom was therefore put into operation on May 2, 2002, which logistically and technically made it possible to broadcast around the clock when the density of events increased.

Previously, for some time, a pair of moderators ( male / female ) who changed each week had been employed, but on October 14, 2002, they returned to individual moderation. For a short time there was also a ZIB at 12 noon, which was discontinued in spring 2002 for cost reasons.

Since July 5, 2004, ZIB broadcasts can also be received digitally and unencrypted across Europe via Astra on ORF 2 Europe .

Basic structure before 2007

  • The ZIB 1 was a day at 19:30 on ORF 1 and ORF 2 broadcast and was the most-watched news program in Austria. It dealt with current news from home and abroad and offered daily cultural reporting.
  • The ZIB 2 was sent from Monday to Friday at 22:00 on ORF 2 and 3sat switched through. At 10:25 p.m., 3sat said goodbye to the audience. The ZIB 2 is designed as a journal broadcast, in which, in addition to news, background reports, discussions with studio guests and live broadcasts are shown.
  • On the weekend, instead of ZIB 2, a late edition of the ZIB was broadcast with one of the ZIB-1 moderators.
  • Until 2007, the ZIB 3 was broadcast on ORF 2 at midnight and was designed to compete with the news offerings of the private broadcasters more boulevard-heavy. A frequent element of the program were disputes on current topics. The current follow-up broadcast to ZIB 3 is ZIB Nacht (formerly ZIB 24 ), which was moved to ORF 1.
  • In addition, ORF 2 also broadcast other short news programs under the program title ZIB with the respective suffix at 9:00, 13:00 and 17:00. The outputs at 9:00 and 13:00 are also broadcast by 3sat.
  • Since 2004, ORF 1 has broadcast short news programs under the title newsflash in the afternoon and evening programs .
  • Special programs were broadcast as ZIB SPEZIAL on important Austrian or international events.
  • From 1985 to 1997 the ORF also produced the Mini-ZiB , a news program for children. This was later replaced by Confetti News in the children's program Confetti TiVi .

Restructuring from 2007

In the spring of 2007, the daily news offering on ORF was restructured and expanded. The most important change after discussions in the editorial team was the task of switching the time in the picture at 7:30 p.m. to both channels. Since then, it has only been broadcast on ORF 2, which resulted in a (further) loss of market share the evening before. When asked about this, the ZiB-2 moderator Armin Wolf was quoted in 2013 in the magazine profil with:

“In retrospect, I think it was a mistake. We wanted to keep people who would otherwise go to RTL or Pro 7 with entertainment on ORF 1 . But it turned out that most of the boys do not switch to ORF 2 for the "ZiB". "

- Armin Wolf : Interview in the profile, March 2013

Other changes were:

  • The newsflash was renamed to ZIB Flash and the program was also broadcast on Saturdays and Sundays.
  • The ZIB 20 daily at 8 p.m. on ORF 1 offers a compact daily summary in about seven minutes with the most important news from politics, business, chronicle, culture and sport for the target group 12 to 49. Often no more than five contributions are shown. This program was conceived to compete with the successful ProSieben AustriaNews , to which many, mostly younger, viewers had previously migrated.
  • The 20-minute midnight magazine ZIB 24, broadcast from Monday to Friday at around midnight on ORF 1, replaced the previous ZIB 3 on ORF 2.

On March 8, 2009, the ZIB programs on ORF 1 got a new design. From March 4, 2013, the ZIB programs were presented not only in the ORF-1 design, but also from a new studio. In addition, the entire previous evening on ORF 1 was redesigned and the ZIB magazine was created, which could be seen directly in front of ZIB 20 . It was moderated alternately by Christiane Wassertheurer and Gerhard Maier . Since then, ORF 1 weather has existed in front of ZIB 20 . At 8:08 p.m., ZIB 20-Sport with a short summary of current sporting events will be broadcast as part of ZIB 20.

The discussion program ZIB 24 Talk was broadcast for the first time in February 2014 .

The ZIB rail was relaunched on January 19, 2015:

  • The large studio, which was previously divided into the right-hand part for the ZIB broadcasts and the left-hand part for magazine broadcasts such as today's broadcasts, has received a new 360 ° video wall and is now being used throughout the entire area by the ZIB .
  • The display of the “globe”, which already exists as a trademark, was improved by importing new NASA satellite images.
  • The design was refreshed with more brilliant colors after the presentation of the ORF. The graphic elements and the signature have been adapted, so the ZIB logo now has a red background reminiscent of the ORF logo instead of the blue one that had been used for decades.
  • There should be a stronger focus on the background to current topics.
  • In addition, as part of these innovations, the designs for the Hohes Haus and Pressestunde programs are to be revised.

Innovations 2019

  • Since January 13, 2019, an issue of ZIB 2 under the title ZIB 2 has been broadcast on ORF 2 on Sunday at 9:50 p.m. This will be moderated exclusively by Martin Thür .
  • As of April 8, 2019, the ZIB editions were restructured from Monday to Friday on ORF 1. The new 8-minute ZIB 18 is now sent at 6:00 p.m., bringing the previous 6:00 p.m. output of the ZIB Flash forward to 5:05 p.m. A new, more detailed information program will then be broadcast from 6:10 p.m. with magazine 1 , which will replace the ZIB magazine . The ZIB 24 was in the CIA night renamed and will now be sent an hour earlier (start time mostly between 22:40 and 23:20).

Innovations 2020

  • The ZIB 1 is due to the COVID-19 pandemic in Austria extended since mid-March 2020 and has since been aired next ORF 2 on ORF. 1 The connection to ORF 1 will be maintained regardless of the coronavirus pandemic, whereby the ZIB 20 previously broadcast on ORF 1 was discontinued. The program length is around 25 minutes until further notice.
  • On May 6, 2020, Tobias Pötzelsberger replaced Johannes Marlovits as the presenter of Zeit in Bild 1 . This change was originally planned for Easter 2020, together with a new look and additional content, but was postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic. The new look is expected to follow in September 2020. Johannes Marlovits works as editor for television information.

Temporary adjustments during the COVID-19 pandemic

From mid-March to June 28, 2020, ZIB 1 was also switched to ORF SPORT + and to ORF III until March 30, 2020. In addition, a three-minute “ZIB Zack” adapted for school children was broadcast on ORF 1 from March 18 to July 3, 2020 from Monday to Friday three times a day between 9 a.m. and 12:15 p.m. as part of the children's and youth program “ORF1-Freistunde” . A rotating team of moderators from the ZIB editorial team was voluntarily isolated within the ORF center from March 23, 2020 until the end of the exit restrictions on April 30, 2020. In the first two weeks these were Armin Wolf, Nadja Bernhard, Tarek Leitner and Margit Laufer and from the third week Martin Thür. Later the team of moderators consisted of Susanne Höggerl, Johannes Marlovits and Tobias Pötzelsberger.

  • The main edition of Zeit im Bild, which is broadcast daily at 7:30 p.m. on ORF 1 and ORF 2 , has been officially titled ZIB 1 again since January 2015 and, as before, has been broadcast with double moderation. It deals with current news from home and abroad and offers daily cultural reporting. The ZIB 1 is the only news broadcast by ORF in sign language produced. The broadcast on 3sat ends at 10:25 p.m. or on Fridays at 10:35 p.m. On ORF 2 there is a reference to the following programs, but sometimes other programs are also shown.
The ZIB 2 is designed as a journal broadcast, in which, in addition to news, background reports, discussions with studio guests and live broadcasts are shown. The duration of the broadcast is usually 25 minutes, but is not as strictly limited as that of ZiB 1. If necessary (hot topics of the day, lengthy studio talks), the program will be extended by a few minutes. On Saturday, instead of ZiB 2, a late edition of ZiB will be broadcast with one of the ZiB-1 moderators. Politicians or other persons with a high level of public attention are subjected to so-called fact checks when they make controversial statements .
  • The ZIB 18 broadcast daily at 18:00 on ORF 1 and provides in about eight minutes a compact summary of the day with the most important news from politics, economy, history, culture and sport.
  • The ZIB Nacht is the latest edition of the ZIB and is broadcast on ORF 1 from Monday to Friday, depending on the end of the previous programs, starting from around 10:40 p.m. to 11:20 p.m.
  • In the afternoon program of ORF 1 there are two ZIB Flash broadcasts from Monday to Friday - since April 8, 2019, usually at 4:20 p.m. and 5:05 p.m.
  • In addition, ORF 2 broadcasts other short news programs under the program title ZIB with the respective suffix at 9:00, 13:00 and 17:00. The outputs at 9:00 and 13:00 are also broadcast by 3sat. On Sundays, ORF 2 also broadcasts a ZIB short edition at 11:00 a.m., shortly before the press hour or the European studio.
  • Since March 29, 2016, on ORF 2, Monday to Friday between 6:00 and 8:30 a.m. (since August 21, 2017, between 7:00 and 9:00 a.m.), as part of the breakfast television program Guten Morgen Österreich , five-minute and Three-minute short editions of the ZIB are sent every half hour . These provide an overview of the most important current topics, which are displayed one after the other in the form of headlines arranged one below the other.
  • Since April 25, 2016, the short messages ZIB 100 have also been available on ORF III from Monday to Friday . This 100-second broadcast is produced in portrait format and is fully subtitled. It is therefore suitable for viewing on smartphones and can be broadcast on part of the television picture during the parliamentary debates that are often broadcast on ORF III.

ZIB Newsroom

Since the ORF program reform on April 10, 2007, Zeit im Bild has completely rebuilt its studio with its numerous other news programs . The core element is the counter behind which the moderators sit. The studio decoration essentially consists of six video walls - large televisions lined up next to one another and one below the other, on which the globe or graphics for weather etc. are shown. By April 9, 2007, the part of the newsroom that was opposite the ZiB-Platz seen on TV was rebuilt (before the reform, the backdrops for the “ Weltjournal ” and “ Thema ” or “ Report ” were set up there). On April 10, 2007, this newly designed area of the newsroom went on air. In the transition phase from April 10, 2007 to January 6, 2008, the newsroom was also rebuilt on the other side, where the old ZiB studio was, until the hexagon that can be seen today was created. Today is (seen from the studio entrance) always produced on the right side of the CIA on ORF 2, on the left side, the broadcasts go lunch in Austria and currently in Austria , orientation , the ethnic group magazine home Fremde Heimat, the High House and the press hour and the European studio. Since January 2015, the left side has also been used for the production of the ZIB issues.

Due to complaints from viewers, the background with the globe was changed slightly from 7 January 2008 in the new broadcast area. The viewers felt disturbed or distracted by stripes that went from top to bottom through the background. From April 8, 2009, the ZIB broadcasts on ORF 1 also took part.

Since April 8, 2019, all ORF 1 information programs have been broadcast from a new studio. According to the motto "ORF 1 proves rough edges", the individual elements are rectangular or square. The title below the images displayed on the video walls appears separately on the oblong desks equipped with image surfaces in white letters on a red background. Otherwise, the turquoise-blue color in the background continues to dominate for the ZIB programs.
