history

1988–1993: foundation, relocations, cable duct

On October 13, 1988, ProSieben Television GmbH was founded as the successor to Eureka TV . The founding shareholders were Gerhard Ackermans (51 percent) and Thomas Kirch (49 percent). One can assume that Thomas Kirch acted as the front man of his father Leo Kirch , who at the time held shares in the competitor program Sat.1 , for antitrust reasons . Thomas Kirch soon took over the station completely.

On January 1, 1989, ProSieben (then still “Pro 7”) started broadcasting nine hours a day from Munich . The founding managing director was the South Tyrolean Georg Kofler . At the time, ProSieben employed 70 people and, according to its own information, had a reach of 2.44 million viewers.

When the transmitter was switched on to the DFS-Kopernikus satellite in July 1989, the range was expanded. The broadcasting time was gradually increased to 17 hours a day, and ProSieben also received the first terrestrial frequency for a private broadcaster in Munich . On December 8, 1989, the transmitter was switched to the Astra 1A satellite .

On March 1, 1990, the television station moved from Schwabing to Unterföhring near Munich. At that time, ProSieben had 120 employees, with a new management since January 1, 1990. Two months later the ProSieben television studios in Unterföhring were completed. ProSieben has been broadcasting its program around the clock since October 1, 1990.

In 1991 the 100 percent subsidiary Teledirekt GmbH was founded, which promoted the spread of satellite technology in Germany. Although ProSieben was still in the red at the time, it founded the special- interest broadcaster Der Kabelkanal together with Deutsche Bundespost TELEKOM in 1992 , in which ProSieben initially held a 45 percent stake. Since the station could initially only be received via a cable connection , it was intended to help win new customers for Telekom's cable television network . In 1995 ProSieben took over all of the shares in the cable channel and renamed it Kabel 1 . The unencrypted broadcast of the program via the SES Astra satellite now began .

In 1992, the MGM MediaGruppe Munich (now SevenOne Media ) was founded in July and was responsible for the marketing of advertising time for the ProSieben family of channels. One year later, on September 24th, the SZM Studios (SZM stands for SendeZentrum München , since June 2004: ProSiebenSat.1 Produktion GmbH ). At the end of 1993, ProSieben was in the black for the first time.

1994–1999: IPO, N24 and program window

ProSieben launched its teletext service in 1994 and received a new station logo on October 24, 1994. The turnover in the year mentioned was 1.192 billion DM (today about 786 million EUR ) and the profit before taxes 144 million German marks (today about 95 million EUR). On 19 December 1995, was ProSieben Television GmbH into the corporation ProSieben Television AG (from 1996 ProSieben Media AG , since 2000, ProSiebenSat.1 Media AG) transferred and Leo Kirch related Rewe Group was 41.6 percent with shareholders (Thomas Kirch remained main shareholder). 1998 Kirch Media AG held 58.4 percent of the shares in ProSieben Media AG. Georg Kofler took over the chairmanship of the board .

In 1996, ProSieben received nationwide broadcasting approval and launched its Internet offering. In the same year AT&TV Merchandising Concepts GmbH and Merchandising München KG were bought; sales rose to 1.69 billion German marks.

In 1997 and 1998 the advertising windows for Switzerland (1997) and Austria (1998) were launched. The Austrian ProSieben Austria also got its own news program ( ProSieben AustriaNews , formerly ProSieben Austria TopNews) . Together with RTL, ProSieben operated a joint program window in Switzerland called RTL / ProSieben Switzerland , which, however, was closed overnight after only seven months on air in the spring of 2000. In contrast, the program windows in Austria on ProSieben Austria, Sat.1 Austria and Kabel eins Austria are more durable . The Austrian program is continuously being expanded. In cooperation with the Austrian broadcaster Puls 4 , among other things, the three-hour breakfast television Café Puls is offered on the three channels .

On 7 July 1997 ProSieben went to the stock exchange (at 50-fold oversubscription of the shares), but only non-voting were preferred shares issued. One year later, the company was promoted to the MDAX . In 1998 the ProSieben House, which cost twelve million German marks, was inaugurated in Berlin .

In 1999 the news channel N24 was founded , which went on air in early 2000. ProSieben wanted to compete with the then monopoly in the news and business television sector n-tv (which was particularly popular because of the stock market boom at the time) and expand the family of channels. N24 now has a larger audience share than n-tv. In 1998 ProSieben took over the news agency ddp .

On September 19, 1999, ProSieben began broadcasting digital multichannel sound in Dolby Digital format. The Dolby Digital stream can be received via the Astra satellite system in DVB format. The complete program has since been broadcast in Dolby Digital 2.0 format. Special feature films are broadcast in Dolby Digital 5.1. The first feature film in 5.1 format on ProSieben was courage to truth .

In March 2000, the ProSieben subsidiary SevenSenses was founded and is now one of the most successful creative agencies. In June 2004 it merged with SZM Studios to form ProSiebenSat.1 Produktion GmbH .

Since 2000: Merger with Sat.1 to form ProSiebenSat.1 Media AG

At the end of 1999, Thomas Kirch brought his shares into his father's KirchMedia GmbH & Co KGaA, which became the majority shareholder in both Sat.1 and the ProSieben Group. As of February 1, 2000, the Swiss business lawyer Urs Rohner was appointed CEO of ProSieben; Georg Kofler , who had headed ProSieben since it was founded, left the company. Urs Rohner had no experience in the television business; His appointment was based on the fact that Leo Kirch had wanted a business lawyer as chairman of the board who would legally merge the Sat.1 and ProSieben companies.

On October 13, 2000, twelve years after ProSieben was founded, ProSiebenSat.1 Media AG shares were traded on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange for the first time . Already in the following month of November it comes to the merger of the two companies marketing Media Group Munich (ProSieben) and MEDIA 1 to SevenOne Media .

In the course of the merger, a ProSieben Television GmbH is (newly) founded, but this only has the purpose of operating the ProSieben television station itself. Nicolas Paalzow has been the managing director of the new ProSieben Television GmbH since 2000 . He was followed in May 2004 by Dejan Jočić , who was replaced by Andreas Bartl in December 2005 - the latter having previously worked as such at kabel eins . In May 2008 Thilo Proff became head of the station, followed by Jürgen Hörner (April 2011). Wolfgang Link has been Managing Director of ProSieben since August 2012 . On February 12, 2015, a new station design went on air, with the previous slogan We love to entertain you being retained. Campton was chosen as the new font, replacing the previous NeueHelvetica Pro font.

We Love To Entertain You

We Love To Entertain You is the broadcaster's slogan. In 2018, the British singer Rita Ora recorded the song We Love To Entertain You You You for ProSieben. In October 2019, Joko Winterscheidt and Klaas Heufer-Umlauf had to compose and record a new version as a punishment for their defeat of a show Joko and Klaas against ProSieben . The video premiere took place in the program taff on October 18, 2019. The slogan goes back to the work of the former head of marketing and German media manager Kai Blasberg .

program

For several years, ProSieben has been trying to get rid of its feature film station image , and since then numerous series and infotainment formats have been launched. Since 2007, Switzerland has been broadcasting its own program window again (for example Faces TV) , which means that Swiss cable customers cannot receive the regular program at these times.

In 2009, ProSieben distributed fake news about insect attacks on people and a rapidly aging baby, which they designed as an advertisement for the FBI's Fringe series , but which the State Media Commission fined about 3,500 euros as a youth protection violation .

ProSieben HD

On October 14, 2004, a high-resolution ( HDTV ) simultaneous transmission ( simulcast ) of the ProSieben-BBC coproduction PRIDE - The Law of the Savannah was carried out for the first time in addition to the standard definition in PAL. On October 26, 2005, the test was expanded and a permanent simulcast channel was started, on which selected films and series were shown in native HDTV and the remaining portions were upscaled from SDTV resolution to HDTV resolution. This test was supposed to prove the high-definition capability and future security for further transmissions, but the test was temporarily stopped on February 16, 2008, because HDTV usage in Germany had not developed as hoped. Since January 2010 ProSieben has been broadcasting in HD again. In Germany it is via the Astra HD + platform , in the cable network with Unitymedia , PŸUR and Kabel Deutschland as well as via IPTV with EWE TV-Home, SWB TV-Home, OsnaTel TV-Home, M-net TVplus, 1und1 digital TV, MagentaTV , and Vodafone TV can be received for a fee. Since October 23, 2017 also in HD on Magine TV in the Comfort HD or Deluxe HD package.

From Good Friday to Easter Monday and at Christmas 2014, the HD channels of what was then ProSiebenSat.1 Media AG could be received unencrypted; the encryption was lifted again on the Day of German Unity, on October 3rd and 4th, 2015.
