The Joyn GmbH (previously 7TV Joint Venture GmbH ) is a German joint venture of media giants ProSiebenSat.1 Media and Discovery that deals with streaming media employs products. It operates the Joyn streaming platform , which has more than seven million users per month in January 2020, and the video-on-demand portal Maxdome , which has more than one million subscribers.
On June 18, 2019, the Joyn streaming platform officially replaced its predecessor 7TV , and Maxdome and the Eurosport Player will also be integrated into the streaming platform and replaced by mid-2020 .
history
7TV Joint Venture (2017-2019)
Beginning in May 2017 the two founded media company ProSiebenSat.1 Media and Discovery , a joint venture with the aim of a new German-language OTT - and mobile TV - Streaming launching platform. In the course of this, the joint venture 7TV Joint Venture took over the operation of the streaming app and website 7TV , which was provided by ProSiebenSat.1 Digital GmbH from summer 2014 . While previously only TV programs , films and series from the TV stations of the ProSiebenSat.1 Group could be seen, 7TV was supplemented with content from the TV stations DMAX , TLC Germany and Eurosport from summer 2017 . There was also the opportunity to stream the free TV channels of both TV groups live in the app and on the website. From April 2018 the program of Sport1 , Welt and N24 Doku and from December 2018 that of ZDF , ZDFneo and ZDFinfo could be streamed live.
At the end of June 2018 it was finally announced that the previous streaming offers 7TV , Maxdome and Eurosport Player would be integrated into the new streaming platform . In the course of this, Maxdome moved from Unterföhring to downtown Munich . 7TV has been based there since it was founded in 2014. Some Eurosport Player employees are also employed there. Furthermore, on January 15, 2019, Maxdome GmbH was merged with 7TV Joint Venture GmbH, which has been operating the video-on-demand portal since then.
Joyn (since 2019)
Beginning in May 2019 gave the two media company ProSiebenSat.1 Media and Discovery announced that the new OTT - and mobile TV - streaming platform called Joyn will wear. As part of this, 7TV Joint Venture GmbH was renamed Joyn GmbH on May 13, 2019 . The new word mark is made up of the words Joy ( English for joy ) and Join ( English for connecting ). Both media companies expect to reach 10 million customers within two years.
7TV was finally officially replaced by the new streaming platform Joyn on June 18, 2019 . At the end of the year, Maxdome and the Eurosport Player should also be integrated into the platform. As early as May 15, 2019, a beta test with restricted content was running , for which you could register as a tester on the website.
At the Screenforce Days on June 26, the company announced that it had more than one million users in the first week after the launch of the new streaming platform. About three months later, on September 11 gave the ProSiebenSat.1 Media - CEO Max Conze on the Dmexco known to have been reached more than 3 million total app downloads and more than 10 million visitors.
The paid subscription video-on-demand offer Joyn Plus + was launched on November 26, 2019 . Unlike previously announced, Maxdome will initially continue to exist until 2020. Only about 34,000 of 50,000 max cathedrals were gradually integrated into Joyn Plus + . In addition, there is no automatic migration of Maxdome customers to Joyn Plus + . The content of the Eurosport player should be integrated into Joyn Plus + in mid-2020 . The German-Chilean thriller series Dignity , which was released on December 19, 2019, was Joyn Plus +’s first paid television series after free comedy series such as Die Läusemutter , Ms. Jordan equals and Check Check had already been published on Joyn.
Since December 6, 2019 which is free TV - division program Joyn Primetime operated by the Joyn GmbH. The program is only free to receive on the Internet via Joyn's live TV service.
In January 2020, the streaming platform had more than seven million users per month. At the end of February 2020, a television series, What We Do in the Shadows , was published in the original English version for the first time - at the beginning of February, only the German dubbing was available for the series.
In an interview with the media magazinequotemeter.de , the Joyn managing director Katja Hofem announced in mid-June 2020 that more than 10.4 million app downloads had been achieved and around 7.2 million monthly active users were counted. She also announced that all previous in-house productions, with the exception of The Entertainers , have achieved a high number of hits above expectations.

Services offered
The company offers various free and mandatory services, some of which require a user account.
At the start of the platform, all offered services could be used free of charge and without registration. Since the end of November 2019, in addition to the basic offer, there has been the paid subscription video-on-demand offer Joyn Plus + , in which the online video library as well as more media libraries, live TV channels and exclusive content are available. In addition, all content is there in a higher resolution.

Joyn offers various media libraries of individual TV stations, the selected video content ( television shows and broadcasts included). These have either previously been broadcast on television or in advance content that is to be broadcast promptly (usually one week later). At the moment there is content from 16 broadcaster media libraries, five of which are only available with Joyn Plus + . The content is either in SD or HD resolution.

Online video library
Since the end of November 2019, Joyn has been offering an online video library through the paid subscription video-on-demand offer Joyn Plus + . German and foreign television and cinema productions are available for download in SD and HD resolution. These include above all American and German cinema films , German television films , US American and German television series and British documentaries . The approximately 34,000 contents come mainly from Maxdome and were gradually integrated into Joyn.
Joyn Selection
Joyn Selection since May 2020. The on-board Wi-Fi in ICE trains of Deutsche Bahn available. A changing range of series, films, documentaries and children's content from the provider's catalog is available to travelers free of charge. In addition to the free content, Joyn Plus + subscribers also have an expanded selection. Over 600 films and series episodes are available for paying customers on the ICE, but the total offer is 30,000 items. The content is kept ready on a local server on the train so that it is available regardless of the Internet connection. Joyn Selection replaces the previous Maxdome onboard offer , which has been available since spring 2017.

Live TV
In addition to the video-on-demand offer, Joyn also offers Internet television . TV channels of the public service broadcasting company , the ProSiebenSat.1 Media and Discovery Group and other TV channels are made available as a continuous live stream. The television channel Joyn Primetime is also operated via the live TV service . It also has a Now-Next program preview function, in which users receive an overview of all currently broadcast and subsequently broadcast programs of the television stations.

Joyn primetime
Joyn Primetime is a German private television specialty program of Joyn GmbH and went on air on December 6, 2019. The station only broadcasts between 8 p.m. and 12 a.m. and focuses entirely on fictional licensed series. Between midnight and 8 p.m. there is a break in broadcasting during which a promotional loop with a program preview and trailer runs. The station is freely receivable only via Joyn's live TV service. It is only broadcast in HD resolution.
The television program was started for licensing reasons. For some series, the ProSiebenSat.1 Media Group and Discovery only have licenses for linear broadcasting and not for video-on-demand . However, the license agreements also include the right to post the episodes online for a certain period after the TV broadcast. International series for which too few viewer numbers are measured or expected on linear television can thus be made available for viewing with the detour of the linear internet station. The first licensing series that Joyn showed Primetime was Hit the Floor .
Joyn Primetime was licensed by the Bavarian State Center for New Media (BLM) on April 11, 2019. The working title of Joyn Primetime was 7TV Sender / Fiction .
Forum
Under the name Joyn Community , the streaming platform operates a forum for exchanging experiences with Joyn. In order to gain access to posts on the forum, a user account must first be created. In addition to discussions, registered users can ask questions and post ideas and take part in surveys. Points are collected that should be redeemed for rewards. However, the latter is not yet possible.
Exclusive Joyn content
Similar to the other video-on-demand services Netflix or Prime Video , Joyn produces and publishes exclusive content. In-house productions that are produced for the Joyn streaming platform and published there for the first time are marketed under the “Joyn Original” label . Third-party productions that are published for the first time in Germany or in German-speaking countries are labeled as “Joyn Exclusive”. While all original and exclusive content that was published up to the end of November 2019 was available free of charge, since then much content has only been available with the paid subscription video-on-demand offer Joyn Plus + . The content is made available in either SD or HD resolution.
