Smart TV , sometimes also hybrid TV , is the name for TV sets with additional computer functions, especially Internet capabilities. Smart televisions have additional interfaces such as USB, network, WLAN and memory cards . The most important additional function for manufacturers is the HbbTV functionality.

Functionalities

A broadband connection is a prerequisite for being able to use an internet and network-compatible television set to its full functionality . A smart TV makes it possible to surf the Internet or, at the push of a button on the remote control, to call up individual films from online video stores , starting immediately, optionally in SD, HD or UHD quality. It is also possible to access video, music and image files that are stored on a PC. Video calls via Skype can also be held on the television. The TV set can be controlled via smartphone , tablet , USB and Bluetooth keyboard, after the user who has one of these devices has downloaded and installed the appropriate app for the respective manufacturer .

Manufacturer

Several manufacturers offer smart TVs:

Retrofitting

Alternatively, the options for using televisions can also be expanded via a connection (mostly HDMI) to external PCs, laptops or HDMI sticks , or using a suitable set-top box.

Numerous companies offer thumb-sized micro-computers with the Android operating system , which can turn any television into a smart TV device. These are compact dongles with an ARM processor that are connected to an HDMI connection on the television - hence also called HDMI sticks - and can be controlled via the remote control, in some cases also via smartphone or tablet .

privacy

Every network connection capable of return channels offers the possibility of transmitting personal or other data to the manufacturer or other parties, mostly content providers. For the procedure it is necessary for the television to contact the information provider. This is a qualitative change: while the user remains anonymous with normal television, he may now be identifiable. Tests have shown that sometimes personal data is sent without the user having activated the corresponding functions. This is questionable in terms of data protection law, especially since the content provider can also make the data available to third parties. The manufacturer Samsung also warns its customers that if the device's voice control is switched on, private conversations in the living room could be overheard by third-party providers.
