Android TV is a smart TV platform developed by the technology company Google . With the help of the mobile operating system Android , interactive television is to be made possible by displaying a user interface specially adapted for television.

history

Android TV was introduced on June 25, 2014 at Google I / O as the successor to Google TV . The operating system can be integrated into televisions as well as into separate set-top boxes .

In November 2014, the first device with Android TV, the Nexus Player , which was developed by Google in cooperation with Asus , was presented.

functionality

After logging in with a Google account, users have access to Google Play and can download media streaming services (e.g. Netflix or Hulu ), games and other apps from the Google Play Store . The platform supports a voice search that the media can find and answer questions (e.g. which films have been nominated for the Oscar of a certain year) and works across systems. With Android TV and the Android SDK, software developers can easily adapt and optimize existing Android apps to the system.

The TV interface is divided vertically into three areas on the start page: At the top there are recommendations based on viewing habits, including media apps, a list of inputs, other apps and games. It is operated using a standard remote control , a special touch remote control (as supported, for example, on Sony devices), game controllers ( e.g. a PlayStation controller) or the Android TV app.

Furthermore, Google Cast implemented in Android TV, which makes it possible multimedia content from other devices (eg. As tablets or smartphones ) on Android TV devices to transfer. Google Cast supports both Android and iOS devices.
