history

Hisense development center in Qingdao

The electronics company Hisense left Qingdao No. 2 Radio Factory, which started operations in 1969 and initially produced transistor radios . In 1979, the company merged with other electronics manufacturers to form the Qingdao General Television Factory and began producing television sets. In April 1997 it was finally renamed Hisense Electrical Co. Ltd. listed on the Shanghai Stock Exchange .

In the following years the company continued to grow and expand its product range. There were also several takeovers and collaborations. In 2002 Hisense entered into a joint venture with Hitachi to develop air conditioning systems. In 2006, Guandong Kelon Electrical Holdings Co. Ltd. was taken over. In 2008 Hisense entered into another joint venture with household appliance manufacturer Whirlpool . In August 2013, the company entered into a technology partnership with the German TV manufacturer Loewe for cooperation in the areas of purchasing, development and sales. The collaboration ended after Loewes went bankrupt again with the takeover by the Cypriot company Skytec in January 2020.

At the end of July 2015, the company announced the takeover of the North and South American TV business of electronics manufacturer Sharp . Due to quality defects in television production and the associated brand name damage, Sharp has been trying to reverse the takeover since 2017. The parties are currently arguing in court.

In June 2018 Hisense acquired 94% of the shares in the Slovenian household appliance manufacturer Gorenje for 293 million euros .

As of 2015, Hisense employed around 75,000 people at 16 production sites and eleven research and development facilities worldwide . The company also has offices in Europe, North America, Australia, Africa and Southeast Asia and sells its products in over 130 countries.

Hisense has been a premium partner of Bundesliga soccer club FC Schalke 04 since the beginning of the 2014/2015 season . The agreement was concluded for three years and includes, among other things, advertising on the LED boards in the stadium and other advertising spaces. Hisense is also active as a sponsor in tennis (formerly the Hisense Arena in Melbourne , Australian Open ) and motor racing (including Infiniti Red Bull Racing , NASCAR Xfinity Series ).

The Chinese “electronics giant” was the last member to strengthen the ten-man team of global partners for the 2016 European Football Championship .
