Traffic management

Traffic management is a branch of traffic telematics . From the perspective of the operator of a traffic system, it deals with the improvement of traffic processes within the framework of the existing structural traffic infrastructure and traffic facilities.

As a rule, traffic management is based in the operations department of the respective mode of transport. In the case of road maintenance, these are the control centers of the traffic control systems and tunnel controls, in the municipalities the traffic control centers , in the case of public transport companies the centers of the computer-aided operations control systems and network controls ( interlocking ) of the rail infrastructure operators .

Subsystems

Traffic management uses modern digital technology to achieve its goals and is based on the following subsystems:

  • Sensor systems for traffic observation
  • Reporting networks for reporting events (construction sites, events) based on the perception of the authorities of the mode of transport or official procedures
  • Transmission systems for communication between the field and control centers
  • Control devices for controlling traffic flows (traffic influencing)
  • Information devices for the control of mobility flows through targeted information of the road user (traffic control)
  • Control centers for monitoring the current traffic situation, deriving the necessary measures, activating the steering and control systems and coordinating with other modes of transport. The following facilities must be operated in the control centers:
    • Traffic models for interpolation and forecasting of traffic development and for the evaluation of strategies
    • Data archives for recognizing behavioral patterns and causal relationships
    • Strategy management systems for triggering, coordinating and synchronizing the predefined strategies
