LISB

LISB means L EIT and I nformation S ystem B erlin and 1988/89 was a field test for an intelligent traffic management . With this real-time traffic control system, individual route recommendations were transmitted via radio beacons that were attached to 240 traffic lights in West Berlin (so-called LISB-IR heads).

700 test vehicles were equipped with specially developed ALI-Scout navigation devices from Bosch / Blaupunkt , which were able to receive route recommendations via an infrared interface. ALI-Scout also consisted of a navigation computer with the option of entering the target coordinates, a locating device that determined the current position using a wheel rotator and a magnetic field probe, and a travel timer.

The data received from the vehicles via the traffic light beacons were analyzed in a central traffic control computer and the guidance recommendations were sent back to the vehicles. The intended aim of the field test was individual dynamic route guidance: the current traffic situation (roadworks, traffic jams, etc.) should be included in the route recommendations.

For the one-year field trial, 14 million DM were estimated. Half were taken over by the industrial partners ( Siemens AG , Bosch , Blaupunkt ), the other half by the public sector ( Berlin Senate , Federal Ministry for Research and Technology) .

After the one-year test phase, it was decided that LISB should not be extended and expanded to other regions. After the conclusion of the study, the infrastructure (LISB-IR heads) was no longer used and gradually removed from the traffic lights. With the general availability of global satellite navigation systems, real-time traffic control systems for private transport have become significantly more cost-effective.
