The Melbourne Arena is a multi-purpose hall with a sliding roof that can be closed in ten minutes in the Australian metropolis of Melbourne in the state of Victoria . It is part of the Melbourne Park tennis complex, where the Australian Open tennis grand slam tournament is held every year. The name sponsor of the arena was the Chinese electronics company Hisense from 2008 to August 2018 . Until the multifunctional sports facility with Vodafone Arena got its first sponsor, it was known as Melbourne Park Multi Purpose Venue .

prehistory

The site on which the Melbourne Arena is now located was formerly part of Yarra Sports Park , the first sports site in the state of Victoria. The sports park was created in 1868 together with a pavilion for the Civil Service Cricket Club . When the club ran into financial difficulties, it transferred the leases for £ 1,000 to Scotch College . The college later moved and no longer needed the site. The football club Old Scotch Collegians Football Club used the sports field until 1992, when it was slammed into the Rod Laver Arena .

Today's arena

The multifunctional sports arena was completed in 2000 and, in addition to tennis, is designed for various sports events such as basketball , netball , boxing , artistic gymnastics , ice hockey , dance sports or track cycling . The Melbourne Arena is also a venue for concerts , dance parties and family events.

It is part of the overall complex Melbourne & Olympic Parks , a complex with several sports facilities, including the Rod Laver Arena, the Melbourne Rectangular Stadium and the Melbourne Cricket Ground . The Arena has a 250-meter velodrome from pine wood , which the Australian track architect Ron Webb was designed. In 2006 the competitions in track cycling, basketball and netball of the Commonwealth Games took place in Melbourne Anrea, then run under the name Vodafone Arena . In 2004 the UCI track world championships were held here; From April 4th to 8th 2012 the arena hosted the track world championships for the second time .
