The Melbourne Rectangular Stadium (also AAMI Park ) is a rugby - and football stadium in Melbourne , Australia .

history

The previous stadium, Olympic Park , had a capacity of 18,500 people, of which only 11,000 were seated.

On April 6, 2006, the Victoria government announced that it would cost A $ 190 million to build a new stadium with a capacity of 20,000. New plans later increased the capacity to 30,000. This stadium was to be the new home for the Melbourne Storm rugby team and Melbourne Victory football club . Construction work began at the end of 2007.

The opening game took place on May 7, 2010 between the two rugby league teams from Australia and New Zealand , which Australia won 8-12. On March 16, 2010, the rights to the name of the Rectangular Stadium were assigned to the Australian motor insurer AAMI ( Australian Associated Motor Insurers Limited ) in an eight-year contract. Since then the stadium has been officially called AAMI Park.

The largest number of spectators was reached at the concert of the Foo Fighters during their wasting light tour on December 3, 2011, when 30,000 fans streamed into the stadium.

In June 2012, AAMI Park was recognized at the World Stadium Awards in Doha , Qatar .

From January 4th to 26th, 2015, the AAMI Park hosted the 2015 Asian Football Championship in Australia.

Stadion

The stadium has a geodesic domed roof that towers over most of the seats. The facade of the stadium is equipped with thousands of programmable LEDs that can display any pattern and graphics .

Overall, the stadium was designed for 20,000 seats, which can be expanded to 25,000 as required. The capacity was later increased to 30,050 at the request of the Victoria government. In addition, additional stands can be set up behind the goals during football games, which have to be removed again during rugby games to make space for the in-goal area .

AAMI Park contains exercise equipment and offices for the Melbourne Storm , Melbourne Victory , Melbourne Demons and Tennis Victoria clubs , the Victorian Rugby Union, the Victoria Olympic Committee, the Olympic Park Sports Medicine Center (OPSMC) and Imaging @ Olympic Park Radiology. In addition, the stadium contains 24 VIP boxes, a dining room for up to 1000 people, a sports hall and a swimming pool.
